I picked up a Vapor II at Wal-Mart for about 25.00 bucks and I find that it is my favorite carry knife. I really did not give this knife a chance when it first came out because I thought that being made in China that it would be junk. I do wish though that it had better blade steel and a little better fit and finish. I'd really like to see Kershaw do a treatment of the Vapor like Buck just did with the Mayo. The questions that I have regarding the Vapor are: What's the difference between the Japanese and the Chinese version? Is the Japanese version still available. I've noticed different hole patterns in the handles. Are these random or are there certain fixed patterns?

If I am correct the Japanese version was the first production run of 1000 pcs made of AUS8, and the Chinese are AUS6.
On the Japanese version's tang is stamped: Made in Japan.
Sorry but I have no info about the availability of the Japanese ones.

I have a japanese version, i have handled a few of the chinese versions at stores, i cant tell the difference.

The stamp on the tang of the Japanese one is only "Japan", and not "Made in Japan". Sorry for the incorrect post.
