Kershaw vs. Rust

You do live in FL, so humidity would be an issue there. You might just need to polish off some of the beadblasted coating in order to smooth out the little crevices that rust can live in. Flitz sends out free samples, give that a try?

As far as preventing rust, you might try switching to a dry film rust inhibitor that's less prone to wipe/wash off (e.g., Tuf-Glide, Fluid Film).

As for what to do about the rust that's already there, I second the suggestion of a good metal polish such as Flitz.

A beadblast or stone wash finish will spot rust at times. When it happens to me I break out a good polish like Flitz, Peek, or Mothers and buff it off by hand. Any good polish will eliminate the rust and give it some protection. Very rarely has rust reappeared for me after the polish use. Using Marine Tuff Cloth after the polish will virtually guarantee that no new rust will develop.

how did you go about getting the rust out of the grooves on the Zing?

not attempting to hijack, just wondering - I've experienced the same and have a tough time cleaning rust out of the zing - if my post is out of place, say so and I'll remove it - thanks!

sorry i didnt reply sooner but i have yet to get it fully out but i let it get bad.
i used a drywall sanding block and pretty much buffed the hell out of it, putting the corners of the block into the grooves the best i could.
the sanding block im useing is like a square foam brick with sandpaper-like sides for drywall.
i used it just because its laying around and old, beat up, and dull.
i dont think you should go buy a new one and do this because i think it will scratch the heck out of the blade (maybe not... but i dunno)
and there are alot better things to use.. but im kinda cheap, so i looked around for what i had in the garage

ETA: in no way did i find your post out of place:thumbup:

I carried a couple of Kershaw knives (JYD II and Needs Work) when I worked on river tugboats in Illinois. Both displayed surface rust after getting wet in the rain or being in a wet pocket. My guess is it is the steel composition and the blade finish that Kershaw uses. It pretty much wiped right off and left only some light surface stains. There was no pitting as I recall. The edge tended to rust more often than the blade itself, most likely due to the coarse edge i preferred.

Some Kershaw knives have Bead Blasted finishes... The bead blasting process sometimes doesn't cover the whole blade, allowing rust to form in these missed areas... This also happened to my zing! Therefore, I will never buy another kershaw with a bead blasted finish ( or just until I leave the temperate climate zone)

I have an older Vapor that rusted on me. I spent some time hand rubbing the blade to a gloss and put some renaissance wax on the blade and it has not rusted since. I haven't had any problems with my Zing or any other Kershaw I have so far. I did wax the Zing when I got it home just in case.
