My father gave me a Kershaw Whirlwind 1560 when I was a teenager. It has since been discontinued. I was wanting to give one or something similar to my teenage son as well. More of a tradition/sentimental type thing… do you guys know what the successor to the Whirlwind is or have a different Kershaw recommendation?

Thanks 🔪 !!!

I don't believe that there ever was a successor to the Kershaw Whirlwind (1560) but there were several different variations of it that were made which are identified in this (in)Complete List of Kershaw Knives.

The Kershaw Avalanche (1570) is the next listed knife by number but I does not have many similarities to the Whirlwind.

Kershaw made mostly "one-off" models and only a few that were made in another generation, including but not limited to the Talon, Storm, Random Task, Cryo & others, which you can find in the list above.

you could check out the kershaw blur, its a usa made kershaw with assisted opening that is one of their more popular models, the one with blue handles and satin finish blade is very nice but i would not buy any of them from ebay as there are tons of fakes and clones on there i would buy it from a legitimate knife dealer site

Thanks … great knife. I think I might have a problem 😉

blur would be my pick of the kershaws around in the whirlwinds time then and still around.

ya still got your whirlwind, op?

Yes. I still have mine … not exactly sure how old I was when I got it, but I feel like it’s got to be 30 years old. I took it apart the other day, and cleaned it. Kershaw even sent me a replacement screw that I requested for it. That’s pretty awesome service.

I would send a picture, but I can’t figure out how to do it

The Kershaw Blur is a great choice, but I think the Kershaw Dividend might be closer to being the spiritual successor to the Whirlwind. It’s a flipper vs. thumbstud, but is closer to the overall lines of the Whirlwind.

The Divided is closing out at this time with only some special versions available at very attractive pricing.

The Whirlwind pattern, and similar designs, are some of my favorite knife designs ever. I really like that American kind of "nuetral", classic, modern folder shape. I still have a whirlwind that I love. Kershaw made two other knives in a very similar shape that I love. The Blackout and the Avalanche. I've had all 3 and love them. The Blackout actually uses the exact same handle, but different blade. The Avalanche is one of my favorite folding knives of all time. A fantastic design. I carried one for a year and a half straight directly before I came back to Bladeforums a couple years ago, or whenever it was. The Avalanche will have the highest end steel of the three different models with S30v. The other 2 will have Sandvik 13c26, or 14c28n, depending on when they were made. All of those steels are great though. Here's my Avalanche, and here's a picture of a Blackout that I found online. If you're like me and like that general shape in a knife, I'd also recommend checking out the Benchmade Griptilian and Bugout. They're a bit pricier, but also great.

My father and I bought whirlwinds about 25yrs ago from cabelas. I was a farmhand and that was my edc from then until last December. I misplaced it during the holiday craziness. Have been searching for another or something to replace it with. The whirlwind was a collaboration between Keyshawn an knife designer Ken Onion. So in your search there are a few Ken Onion collabs still available might be worth checking out. But something about that whirlwind grip that just doesn’t seem to be matched. I used mine for everything from baling wire to cardboard. Thanks for this post has given me some leads as well!

Kershaw really coming out with alot of new nice knives now. I'm suprised, but excited too. Lots of good options to pick from and many made in the US.

There's a place or a guy
Out there,
That sells factory second kershaws, mostly with nothing more than cosmetic annoyances at a good discount
That place,
Is worth a looking into for oddball kershaws
