Well like any douche bag, I screwed up a great gift

Some of you may remember when i asked which knife i should ask for and I picked the Aluminum speed bump from kershaw. Well it was a great knife while it lasted. I tend to TRY to be a perfectionist and when I saw that my shiny new knife wasn't sharp, I just had to fix that! So i get to sharpening and i realize; shit... This is hard to do! Recurves are not fun at all to sharpen. So the edge is ugly as hell and I also screwed up one of the scales a bit. Heres some pics:

This is a picture of the part of the scale that i messed up:

And heres the edge:

Sooooo, Yes I am a moron.

I am sending this in to Kershaw and asked them to replace the one scale and sharpen or replace the blade. Do you think there will be any dispute? I have no experience with Kershaw's customer service.

Did you call Kershaw first or did you just send it in? How did you try to sharpen it? It looks like you took it to a belt sander! Kershaw's customer service is stellar. I'm sure you'll be taken care of.

Nope, Didn't send it in yet. Will call them now (I doubt anyone will be there though.) Paper wheels.. Not so well for hawkbills and recurves I've discovered. Maybe for someone more advanced it would work, but Everytime i try a recurve or hawbill, I fail miserably.

On a side note, On the Kershaw website they say the turn around time is 4-6 weeks. Is this normal? O.o

next time stick with just using a diamond steel...a few passes on a already sharp blade is all you need...of course if you're real sloppy with that you can still jack up the edge...

If i had a diamond steel, I would use it. I used a sharpmaker to begin with, but to no avail. I'm not a novice sharpener. Mind you, this blade not very sharp. This is not the question I asked though.

Do call them first. Explain what you need and see what they say. I've heard the turn around time is much shorter than they say. I've even heard a week, not counting shipping days.

On paper wheels and recurves: Take a file and gently round off the outer edge of each wheel. About a quarter of an inch of the width will be enough. Re-grit the grit wheel, and work the edge on the rounded part of the wheels. Shouldn't give you any further problems.

Thanks for that advice.. will definitely try this.

hey guys just called kershaw and the first thing that struck me was someone actually picked up the phone  I think her name was Jennifer.

I told her what happened and asked if the blade could be sharpened and the scale replaced and.... she said of course! Wow.. This is really cool guys. I haven't even shipped it in and it's some great service already  Lets see how this goes!

Doesn't get any better then that, huh? ;)

Kershaw CS is the best, bar none.

Companies covering end-user mistakes is rare indeed.

Most companies only do defects, not accidents/abuse.

Top notch eh?

I couldn't agree more. Kershaw is a class act all around.

I don't know about warranting this, but I do know that their customer service is good.. I emailed last week with a broken torsion bar for a scallion and had it in the mail today... She told me that I could either send them the knife, or send me the part.. Never asked why I needed it, or how old the knife was..

With that said, I think it would be a good gesture to at least offer to pay for the repair since it was user error, and not faulty equipment... I fear that abuse of the customer service could in time result in not so stellar service to us all..
