Hi all, just got my #18 Blem today. Thought you might like a couple of photos. A before and after. After about an hour and a half of grinding and polishing with half of the residue going up my nose, it turned out not half bad. It will be a user. Next a sheath.
Yes, please share how you got the near mirror finish. I'd love to know what grit sandpaper or polishing compound to get so i can spruce some of my khuks back up to blingy beauty.
Belt grinder, 60 grit to remove black, then 220 to make uniform, then 400 to smooth. Off to the buffer. First black course grit, then brown. White to start polish and green to put a shine on the blade and handle. Finally a 400 git belt and a steel to put a very sharp edge on it.
Sweet work dude. I got #19 and am in the process of fixing it up as well.
The handle had a pretty sizeable crack in it, but i sanded it down and used the sandings plus some wood glue to fill it in - almost looks just part of the grain now. Still needs more sanding and coats of BLO though. Also, I'm keeping the black forge scale on because this will definitely be a user and I like the look of it. I did go ahead and use a file to widen out the bevel, thinning the profile of the blade even more:
Lastly, the really cool thing was that while I was thinning out the bevel, I noticed that I couldn't get the fairly new Nicholson double cut file to catch very well on this whole area - just ended up skating. Had to bust out my diamond stones and ceramic rod to get the edge where I wanted it. Pretty much just means that the blade is well tempered and this whole area is probably 58+ hrc
Gotta say, these KLVUKS are very well put together and make for great projects! I'll be making a leather sheath for mine at some point - probably with an attachment loop for a ceramic rod.
Looks like a great start on it Killa, Can't wait to see it all BLO'd up and with it's sheath. Great idea abou having a place on the sheath for a ceramic rod on these daily user types.
