any one know where to get a nice kevlar apron? i found one in mcmaster carr, but i was wondering if anyone had better prices on them.
thanks in advance.

you might try your local butcher, or sluaghter house, to see where they get their
aprons.

Magnum, just be aware that most good knife points will go through Kevlar. It is good for stopping an edge but not a point.

Jerry,
The above post left you WIDE OPEN for a Mayo verbal barrage!!
Go ahead Tom, Let him have it!

I wouldn't mind a knife proof apron to protect the privates. I'm sure MY knives will go through the Kevlar!!

Neil, did Tom put you up to that? Actually I've had one of my knives run through a bullet-proof vest, and in a slicing cut they will certainly cut through several layers of Kevlar. I just didn't want Magnum to don a Kevlar apron and feel safe.

Personally I wear titanium body armor...

My 2 cents:

How about layered knifemaker's apron - thick leather outer layer, kevlar middle layer, and a fine mesh chain mail inner layer?

Sorry Josh, I made my own. It's one of a kind.

On the apron issue, apart from the normal hand cuts, slices, gouges, burns, abrasions, and contusions, most of the knifemaking injuries I've heard of are from knives being ripped out of a maker's hands by the grinder or buffer (usually the latter) and ending up stuck in his leg or foot.

I use a standard leather apron, but for optimal protection, I'd probably go with something like my SCA armor. Leather covering ABS plastic. The ABS tends to grab and squeeze anything trying to penetrate it at lower velocities.

jerry,
i know that kevlar won't stop a point, i read about it when i checked into bullet proof vests. i wanted one becuase they are more cut resistant (not cut proof) than leather. how did you make titanium armor? should i get steel toes for my boots? i'm working on upgrading the shop safety, so i'm buying a full face mask respirator, and a heavy apron, and some other things.
centaur,
where can i find one of those aprons, how much do they cost? are they very heavy, i don't mind a little weight, but nothing very heavy.
jtt, i can't find any butchers around here, the local one moved, so all i can do is see what the supply companies have.

Magnum,

The layered apron does not exist, at least that I know of. It was just an idea I was toying with. The problem with any "armored" apron is going to be flexibility for comfort. That's why I thought kevlar backed with chain mail. The ABS plastic sounds interesting, but uncomfortable. If it were jointed or segmented...

Using an apron for more than keeping the dirt off your belly is likely wishful thinking. The best thing to keep in mind is to always keep the blade below the middle of the wheel, so if you lose the hanlde it will most likely go straight down or away from you. That is especially true with the buffer. I haven't had the grinder yank one out of my hands yet. I've had belts break though, and that's a good time to have an apron on.

As for something that protects you from getting cut, I rarely work on a sharpened blade, except when I'm sharpening it of course. Otherwise I make sure it is good and dull first.

And for the best way to make titanium body armor. Have someone dip you in molten titanium then saw you out. Make sure they're careful where they make those saw cuts though. The first time I tried this the guy thought he should make me a helmet at the same time...

Jerry, You've got a twisted sense of humor!

I like it! LOL
But I think I'll pass on the dip in molten titanium

I want body armor, but I don't want it that bad!

Molten Ti? Yikes. My ABS armor is segmented, but I don't wear it while grinding for exactly the reasons that Jerry mentioned. I started wearing an apron when using the angle grinder burned holes in my clothes. They're really much better for protection against heat than against being stabbed. If you want to try the ABS armor idea, get some leather rivets, a plastic barrel from your local Car Wash, (They get soap in them, so you know they didn't hold anything nasty), and a seventies leather jacket from the thrift store.
Tools are a jig saw, propane torch and a hand drill or drill press.
Takes an afternoon, real simple.
Have fun!

Words of wizdom from Jerry. A good offense when buffing is better than an armored defense. As far as the molten Ti dip goes, I'll quote from "Ghostbusters"

Bill Murray: "This reminds me of the time you tried to drill a hole in your head."

Harold Ramis: "That would have worked if you hadn't stopped me."
