Key carry? Got any ideas?

I don't carry many keys, just car, house and PO box keys, and my key fob to turn off my house alarm (looks like a car-alarm fob). However, I'm paranoid that I'm going to lose them when I get outdoors in the bush.

Currently I just stick them in a zippered pocket of a waist pack that I have, but I don't like that idea. Putting them in a pocket means they could fall out when I'm running. Putting them on a carabiner on my belt makes too much noise. I don't want to sit on them in my back pocket due to smashing the fob (and being uncomfortable). I also don't like the spring-loaded reels, I've had many bad experiences with those.

Anyone have any other methods of carry?

Along the same lines, how about a more secure wallet carry, such as a trucker's wallet idea, like having a chain from your belt to your wallet?

Thanks...

what you can get is something like what i use to carry my leatherman, i found it at galyans (a sporting goods store) and i think it would fit your needs perfectly. it's a carabiner attached to nylon webbing that is attached to a quick release attachment that is attached to more webbing that is attached to a split ring. that way your keys are attached to your belt loop but they hang into your pocket and you won't sit on them if you put it in your front pocket. they have an added advantage of putting the weight on your belt instead of in your pocket. without one of these systems i wouldnt' be able to comfortably carry a leatherman juice in my pocket every day.
you can see it in this picture

How about something like a DeSantis Nylon Silent Key carrier. It straps around your belt and hangs fairly deep into your pocket. See this site: http://store.yahoo.com/nyironworks/desansilkeyh.html

Carrying keys and all that goes with them is a pain. Not too bad when wearing jeans but more of a problem while dressed up.

Don't know about you but each time I try to downsize what I carry, I end up with some additions within a week's time. I think it's a losing battle. Good luck.

The simplest solution is to stash a backup set
either in your home and in your car. You should
have a backup set anyway, mate. You'll sleep better.

We have a "fake" rock that my wife bought for the
house key that lays in the flower bed with a door
key inside for home. For the cars we have a "key
safe" (magnetic) hidden under the body within
easy reach with door key in it. The ignition
key is hidden inside the car to slow down a
a causal thief.

Bottom line is......
We learned the hard way not to depend 100% on the
keys we carry. Sh!t happens and sooner or later
we're gonna loose a key set.

I have a key holder that goes on my belt, you are supposed to clip a key ring on it and the keys hang on the side, but I wear it upside down, clip my key ring on it (actually an empty key ring set on the ring that holds the keys, to give it some length), pull it up and put the keys inside my waist band.

The keys stay secure and are easy to take out for use, I´ve done this for years with different makes of key holders, I currently use one marked "OKAY´S KEY SAFE", they are easy to find at locksmith shops.

Edited to add:

I found it through a Google search:

Yep, Okay's key safe. Somewhat ugly, noisy, but it has held half a pound of keys for over 15 years. Sometimes rather more than that...

If you have 2 split rings tied together by some appropriate strap or chain, it can also be used to suspend the keys inside the pocket.

I like the old style silent key holder made by Uncle Mikes... Sadly it is no longer made and the new version sucks. I haven't looked around much, but if you check a police supply store(or the online places like Galls and Streichers) just take a look at the silent key holders they have. I went with mine more because it went with the duty belt, but I use it all the time and it's starting to wear out after 3-4 years of heavy use and constantly moving it from belt to belt(those snaps don't last forever ya know... although the velcro isn't so good anymore either - but it all does still work).

I've used two split rings connected by a short, light dog choker collar chain. You can get the small ones (easily long enough for belt-to-pocket) in different colors than just chrome, at most pet stores.

Why not using a Carabiner like the one from Maxped, doesn´t make any noise or look ugly:
Maxped Keyper

and then link the key ring in your pocket with some paracord to it, it´s as durable (or more) than a keychain and makes no noise.

I normally hang my keys off a carabiner clipped to my belt. That's fine for around the town, but a tad noisy for hiking. So, when I'm in the woods, I use a carabiner with a lanyard, so that the keys remain sospended in my pocket. Works great.

Could get all the house keys rekeyed to be the same... including fences and out buildings...

Cut down on some bulk! And maybe drop the tool box keys hidden in the garage instead of on the ring... or in the top of one box, and keep only that key on your personal ring.

Good luck in your search!

Go to www.luckyline.com and browse through their catalog. They have displays in a lot of hardware stores and locksmith shops so you shouldn't have much difficulty ordering one of their products from a local retailer.
