Hi i'm new here. this seems like a nice forum.
anyways i was looking for a good folder that I can keep on my keychain. Something inexpensive and good for various everyday tasks, and no longer than about 3 inches closed. Any good suggestions?

sak classic
spyderco jester, or lady bug
byrd finch

those are all good cheap options

Spyderco Jester is the best Keychain knife out there IMO. The steel is not the best, but it has great ergos and is a lockback. I don't trust any liner/framelock for a keychain knife, just too easy to open in the pocket.

If your limit is 3 inches, than you have a ton of choices. Most of the knives for than 1.5 inches may be to large and heavy to have as a keychain. I also recommend the spyderco Jester or even cheaper but great quality, the Byrd Finch.

I haven't tried the spyderco's, so I don't know anything about them, but I love my little Buck Metro. It was sharp right out of the package, only needed a little touch-up, and the built in bottle opener has come in handy many times.

I would go for the Spyderco Jester

It's maybe not the best of steel but on the other hand: I gave it to my son once and he wittled little sticks with it for quite a while. After that, the knife still easily cut paper;)

SAK manager or rambler, depending if you want a pen or not. It's practically every function you can use in a pinch. I got both a month ago, and it's the perfect keychain knife.

Want something different? See if you can find an old Cold Steel (ya ya ya, I know) Tuff-Lite. They've been discontinued for a while now, but occasionally turn up on certain online auction sites. ;)

The Tuff-Lite is about as long as the Jester/Ladybug, but thinner, and with a broader blade, in either a flat-ground clip point or tanto grind. It's a lockback, like the Spydies, weighs about as much (or as little!), but feels a bit more substantial in the hand. I stumbled across a clip-point one a while back, and love the lil' bugger!

For the record, my keychain knife is a Victorinox Midnight Manager. I got one for my girlfriend, and liked hers so much, I had to go get one for myself!

Those are interesting knives. Never seen those before. I would have to look into those in regards to steel and the such.

The three that I would suggest are:

Spyderco FRN Jester – nice little lightweight knife with a locking blade.

Victorinox Signature Lite – similar to the Classic with a red LED and a retractable pen.

Leatherman Micra – small scissor based multitool.

How about a Benchmite?

I like this idea. It's nigh impossible that it will open accidentally in your pocket. SAKs are good too; most people do not take offense at the sight of them. In this regard, I'd rather take out a SAK to sharpen a pencil in class than a Benchmite. Used my Leatherman Squirt for this today actually. Now that I think about it, the Squirt is dang useful. The little screwdrivers and pliers(P4 ver.) are very helpful. The blade is a little crappy though.

I owned Leather Micra, Benchmade Benchmite II and Spyderco Ladybug.

Amoung these 3, I like:
1. Benchmite II the most for office use. It will never open by itself in the pocket. It weight a bit more than Ladybug, but the steel is also a bit better.
2. Ladybug for weekend. But the steel is not as good though. It is very light. I like it because of the weight and the grippiness of the handle.
3. Micra - it is considering a heavy keychain knife. I do not like to carry packet heavy knife with me. So I leave it in my Laptop bag most of the time for emergency tool if needed.

I am ordering a new Spyderco SPIN, its weight should be between Ladybug and Benchmite II (1.35 oz. comparing to 0.5 oz of Ladybug and 1.6 oz of Benchmite II). The steel is superb (VG-10). It also has the clip, framelock, and stainless steel construction. Once I have it, I can share with you guys the review later.
;)

For just a single locking blade, I say the Staniless Steel Jester. Thoe look really cool on a keychain, and they work great.

For something more useful, I say get a Victorinox Midnight Manager. Having a working inkpen, led flashlight, and all the things needed for trimming, cleaning, and fileing your nails as well as a good working blade is just awesome to have on a keychain. That's what I have on mine. I use it almost every day.
