Last week, I saw a C40P Khalsa on Ebay and bid about 5 bucks higher than the current bid just for kicks and giggles. Well I ended up getting it for $53 shipped and it got here today. This is the best one I've ever seen! I always loved the handle shape on it, but the lock was always a little weak. This one locks up well and feels great, just like always.

Just thought I'd share some hope for those who are looking for older Spydercos. They're out there!

Great knife, poor execution in some of the small but significant details.

Don't mess with the clip. It screws into the micarta and it is not a strong fastening. If you catch the clip on something the micarta can break. You can also ruin the threads trying to re-install the clip. If the clip fails, don't send it to Spyderco if you want it fixed. They won't fix it, but sometimes they will replace it. I'd call first.

Also, I wouldn't flick the blade. I've known people to have liner lock problems and it would probably be best not to stress the structure.

I learned all of those things on the first one I had about 5 years ago. Happily, it was already looking a little worse for the wear, so I don't feel so bad.

I got one about a year ago that was very beat. I didn't pay much for it, so I tore it apart and plan to rebuild it sometime or another. We'll see. But at least know I have a good one, even if my rework doesn't make it.

Does anyone know if they used hardened steel for the liners? If it isn't hardened, then it would be very easy to drill and tap and make the clip more secure. I did that for my friends Spyderco/Wegner.

Congrats. You got a great deal. It's been in my EDC rotation for about 3 years now, and I still love it.

I believe the liners are hardened as they held up fine on Khalsa #2 for me. I drilled and tapped them and loved it until the lockup got sketchy. I sent that one back in for repair, but they couldn't, so they gave me a Shabaria in return.

And brownshoe, you're right about some of the small but very important details. It was one of the earlier liner locks and judging by today's models, they've taken the lessons very seriously. The clip mounted only into the micarta is one example. Another is that the blade tang lockup area is a radius on later designs, whereas on the Khalsa, it's pretty straight. It's on an angle, but it's stil straight. I'd love to see one made today with Spyderco's updated manufacturing processes. It'd be a real nice one, but I'm not holding my breath either. I don't think there's much of a market for it anymore. Just makes me glad I have mine!

i had one and didnt care for it at all, it had a habit of opening up in my pocket, due to the blade shape i think ..............really, other that that (thats a big if lol) it wasnt too bad. the only knife i ever had which cut me every time i carried it. made me wonder about spyderco for a while, to be honest.

guess they learned from it though.

in all honesty i wouldnt pay $50 for another one, imho too many better things around now, glad ya like it though.

Nice score! I've always been a big fan of the Khalsa due to it's different design. Jot Singh Khalsa is one of the finest makers out there by far. Combine him with Spyderco and you have a real winner.
