dilemma

I've now owned two khukuris;

- 15 " BAS Villager by Bura (The khuk I currently own).
- AK 15" by Sher (a slight beast).

I sold the AK a while back when money was a little tight and tbh I'm regretting it.

I took the BAS out a while ago to chop some wood and didn't really feel I had the weight behind the knife to truly bite into the wood, it pretty much felt like I was using a tree-beater (british martindale machete) rather than the AK I'd used before.

In comparison the sher AK seemed to have a much more weight behind it, however at the time I had considered this too much weight.

I guess I'm posting to ask what would be the best khuk to purchase as a replacement?

The role of the khuk will pretty much be entirely for chopping, though I would like a degree of 'knife-ishness' for pointing sticks etc.

With that in mind I'm curious if i might be best heading again for a 15" AK by someone like Kumar to be slightly more slender than my old Sher, or possibly going the whole hog and getting an 18" AK.

Any help / advice much appreciated

To be honest for a heavy chopper and making sharp sticks (tent pegs, etc), even splitting tinder, shaving bark and making large(ish) fuzz sticks, my 20" AK does great. I know most people think they are too big, but to be honest, I think I'd be disappointed in the chopping ability of anything under 18". But then my comparison for chopping isn't with large knives or machetes, it's with axes, so my opinions will be skewed towards the heavier kukris.

One option might be to consider a 16.5" Chirura AK. From various reviews that I've read here, they seem to chop almost as well as an 18" AK while not feeling as blade heavy due to the chiruwa tang.

You could also go with the 17-18" BGRS. It chops very well for its size while being able to do some knife type slicing.

I had heard the Chirua AK transmits alot more shock to the hand due to the handle design?

I use a 18" CAK alot and its not a problem. Its more then the normal handles, but not much so.

A 16-18" BGRS or pen would do you well.

Some sage counsel here. I was going to say the BGRS as well (even more weight-forward than the usual khuk), and the CAK is a good suggestion of you're more conscious of the khuk's weight and don't want to handle something much bigger than your old 15" AK.

my experience get a m43 from hi. us3ed one to stay alive and build a log cabin when living off the land for two years.

I know what you mean about the BAS. I like it, but it doesn't chop with the authority you want in an HI khuk. I also found the chiruwa AK too much on the other side, more like a club. Can't break it though!

I gotta go with the 18" WWII model, although if you want to stay smaller, they do have a 16.5" one.

There appears to be an unclaimed 15-in 23-oz AK still available from 11/19; that's only 1-oz shy of the 24-oz "standard" weight. Of course, if you're looking to go up in size, then that's not what you want.
