looking at buying one of these khukuri's but am new to the game so can someone check out these picks and tell me what is a good buy! and how much should pay for them.

See 3rd posting for images

the second and third images the seller states were bought in Katmandu in market
the larger one is 27cm from tip to start of handle with matching numbers to smaller knives and the smaller of the two is 22cm and smaller knives do not match.

the seller says this about the 1st pic "Traditional cow horn handle and steel blade. Comes in a pouch made of cow hide and tin and engraved on both the pouch, handle and the blade. All hand made. There is also another tiny knife that fits inside the pouch as well. Very much a collectors item. Is from the 1800's.

Genuine Nepalese Soldier's weapon. Two sharpening knives, are contained in the scabbard, with the Khukri.

The last pic seller says this "Khukri was given to me by the British Army-Gurkha unit, in the British Solomon Islands -1970. This Unit was on Jungle
Training and munitions disposal ops.
It was in this work I gave assistance." and "Gurkha Knife has no serial number. Has Nepal identity, and what I believe to be , Regiment no. I do not know history pre 1970, as this weapon is Army issue" Regiment 87th

What says you guys!

I personally am not a fan of Kuhkri's. I did have an Himalayan Imports 18" Ang Khola for a while. Very impressive knife, but I never used it. Part of the impressiveness was the balde thickness and overall weight (tank!) which I felt was too much knife to swing around. I leaned towards using my Becker Knife & Tool - Brute (BK1), TOPS Armaggedon, or an axe for outdoor chores.

But as many on the forum will tell you, Himalayan Imports is the way to go if you want a Kukhri, reference the links below.

Of course there were some interesting threads on some failures / quality issues:

Also, if you are not looking for something made overseas (relative to the US that is), Blackjack makes a Kukrii II (model # BJ014) and Cold Steel also makes a GURKHA KUKRI (model # 35ATCBD). I'm sure other manufactures make Kukhri's as well.

Good luck.

Assuming the "start of the handle" is where the blade disappears nito the handle, they could be OK users or not. One cannot see heat treatment. One can experience it by use or other testing. Lots of what these appear to be show on eBay, so you can check completed auctions to see what they fetch.

Well, the handle appears to be bone, not horn, and it looks like a typical souvenir from the 20th century - or 21st. It is "in the style of" khukuri presented as gifts.

Genuine Nepalese Soldier's weapon. Two sharpening knives, are contained in the scabbard, with the Khukri.
Applies to which? Certainly not the horn-handled one.

The last pic seller says this "Khukri was given to me by the British Army-Gurkha unit, in the British Solomon Islands -1970. This Unit was on Jungle Training and munitions disposal ops. It is in the style of the 1970's issue to UK Ghurka units. What is it's length and what "regiment number" appears on it? 87th" I don't think there is an 87th Ghurkas in the UK OR Indian forces.
(Oh Spiral. Where are you?)

What are you after? A genuine weapon? A user?

I guess I might have jumped the gun. That is a good question to "foxycoxy". I started the same way looking for an authentic Kukhri but had concerns about stuff I was seeing on ebay that appeared to be genuine.

In the end I went with a HI Kukhri which are indeed made in Nepal and have a loyal following here at the Blade Forum.

Listen, blood is slippery. Don't under estimate the kraton handle ones. My brother and I use the Cold Steel and they stay sharp for a very long time. Their chopping ability will take a deer's head off with one good chop.

I am not a great lover of Cold Steel knives, but their fixed blades are hard to beat. It's the steel that counts to me. MV out!

Given the severing of relations beteen Cold Steel and the former maker of their carbon steel knives, Camillus, no one can say much about current-production CS carbon steel knives -- if there is any current production. "New old" stock would be "Carbon V" steel, CS's name for the carbon steel Camillus was using.

I believe the HI products are less costly and they have an excellent reputation backed by excellent warranty and service.

But neither can supply a battle relic if that is what is desired.

Cheers for that guys! Yeah I was after a geniune fighting relic! So many fakes out there but you guys have steered me right!

just looking at atlanta cutlery site pretty cool stuff there and these are fair dinkum? Do you know if they ship to NZ?

Hey knife fury see you their wat think you?

Sorry, I guess the larger one I had seen was a custom job. There pocket ones are real nice but probably lack the hacking you need if you want a full size.

Hey BigJim! yeah I'm after a genuine fighting relic more for a collectors piece for my husbands birthday as he's always said he likes khukuri's

I was just checking out the Atlantacutlery website and I guess I had a question / comment. These Kukhri's are in used condition, as they have been used by the Gurkha regiments and then somehow gotten to these folks to sell. If that is the case, where does the "list price" come from, ie is the "sale price" because they are used?

I personally wanted one that was authentic (made in Nepal) that was also new and a capable knife - a real user (although I knew I would never actually swing the thing).

After research on the Blade Forum, that is why I ended up with Himilayan Imports which are made in there BirGorkha factory in Surya Benai, Nepal. If you go to there website you can see the Kami's making knives (interesting working conditions!).

Best of luck, especially since this is a present for your husband! My Wife let me pick out a knife for my Christmas present! :)
