Khukri as a field knife...

I think that a kukri would make a great field tool as long it has a thin convex edge,so it can chop and cut well. The ones I've seen had very thick edges that literaly bounced off hard wood. For the money I would say that the Ka-Bar Kukri Machete makes a great tool - excellent chopper and can be used for other tasks too ;)

Best Kukri's I've ever had the pleasure of using so far. Are available from Himalayan Imports. They have a forums here on bladeforums.

I swear by their M-43 model. I have used it as my primary field tool for several years of actual survival living, including the building of a couple trappers cabins as well as the building of a score of other survival shelters. Much more useful than a hatchet, and often more useful and effective than an axe.

I found it did work best to team it with a smaller blade of 4-5" blade length for finer tasks.

The KLO's such as the Ka-Bar and other kuk chetes are of absolutely no comparison to the actual performance and capabilities of a true Kukri. The Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri is also a faint resemblance of the true thing. It's main fault lying in it's flat ground blade which makes it stick terribly in cuts, and it's Kraton handle which is a blister factory in use.

Check out the Himalayan Imports forum in the manufacturers section, and you will find a whole bunch of other helpful folks.

Welcome!!

I've been thinkng about getting one of the HI Khukuris for a while, but the more I actually read about them, the farther away I feel from picking a pattern.

I used to think of Khukuris as a subset of big knives, but I've come to think that like machetes, they are in a category of their own.

Remove the Karda from the Khuk and insert a small scandi blade.

Remove the Chakma and insert a firesteel.

Add a tinder pouch, wrap the sheath in paracord :D and pretty good survival rig.

Agreed, I've had one for some time and it's great.

I'll take my Busse TT Killa Zilla Khukri over any hatchet or axe any day. If I could only choose one blade to go into the bush with this would be it.

Hell Yes!
Kukri's are GREAT tools for the woods. I love my collection, I just added a new one, from a different company than the "norm" and was pleased just the same.
This one is from Kukri House

Its my favorite size, 15"-16" overall. I have some larger, and they are cool to, but this size is easiest to tote around.

Here's some Sgt. Kadka's..CAK and Bonecutter

And my Tora, a great big but light kuk. The HI CAK on the right has a new handle, maybe the proud owner will chime in a post a picture of it, now thats a survival Kukri.

what are the notches on his blade near the tang for?

I believe one of the rumoured functions is a 'blood groove', so that after you make your kill, the blood will drip off the groove, rather than flow onto the handle. In use, it's pointless, and simply prevents you from using that part of the blade to choke up with.

I have a KukriHouse one, and I hate it. The handle is way too small, so I wrapped it in paracord. Even with the wrap, when I baton with it, every strike jars my hand to the bone. For some reason I find it doesn't even baton well. You'd think the super thick blade would work as a wedge to help split the wood, but it doesn't, it sticks quite a bit. Chopping isn't much better. It does chop well, but it's uncomfortable. That said, because I don't like it, I don't use it much, so my experience is limited. Perhaps more use and practice with it would yield better results.

That said, to each his own of course. I'd like to give a more modern adaptation of the design a try, something like the first one that Gunknifenut posted looks pretty awesome, getting rid of the blood groove for a choil, and what looks to be a full exposed tang with micarta scales. Any chance of a link to that one bro? I've been searching the KH website to no avail.

What's model of Tora is that on the left?

GAK?

In all honesty..I am not sure. I believe its a GAK or MK, I DO know its one of the finest Kuk's I have ever held..great balance and forward power.
Much better than the "new" take on the handle, this has the old style curved handle, that floats into the curve of the blade. Many HI products, which are FANTASTIC kukri's in their own right, are to straight for my taste.

This one is available on the bay...I dont think I can deal spot.
I bought the "Mcgurdy" but Kukri House made it, and makes the same model and sells it under thier banner as well, also available on the bay.
The Mcgurdy is a guy who already has these in stock in the US, which is why I went with him...I got it in about 3 days, fast shipper.
The fit and finish isnt as fine as HI, but I wanted a beater, and I plan on removing the bone handle at some point, and adding micarta in its place..so this seemed like a no brainer, since all the profile was already done for me.

I am a huge big knife small knife guy

For the big knife a Kuk is a fantastic woods tool

chops better than a Bowie style blade and clears paths or brush better than a hawk or hatchet.

I could do great with a good kuk and a 3 1/2 inch fixed blade

For Kuk's nothing comes close to my Jason Knight Custom but to be fair this is more of a combat Khukuri

My other favorite Kuk is this Dui Chirro from H.I. this is an incredible blade and is less than one tenth the cost of the one from Knight

it did not come with the small blades but a decent sash sheath

dynamite package for the money

I have 2 Mc Curdys and used one of this summer a bit for camping worked well but seemed a little soft and needed to be resharpened alot. I eventually gave it to a buddy but kept the other one. IMHO it did not compare to the custom or the Dui Chirro

I believe I found it on the KH website. I definitley like the looks of it better than the more traditional khuks, and it's a decently carryable size too.
