Hi,
as some of you might have heard (i might have missed the thread) spyderco plans to release a Khukri folder (in their "ethnic series" after the kriss and this also include a barong folder ...) designed by Ed Schempp. I am a lucky/ happy owner of the spyderco kris folder and a kuk fan so when hearing about this i started saving some money ...

I don't know much about the current status of the development process except that the knife has been announced as a future release, but just to dream a little bit about it, here is a picture of one of Ed Schempp's previous custom that might give us a clue, ... and personnally make me VERY impatient,

not everybody might like it and it might seen "useless, why don't you take a real kuk, ...", but it is all a matter of taste :)

A khuk is known for the mechanical advantage over other knife designs for chopping wood. A folder is not as strong as a one peice, and so you end up with a khuk that can't be a khuk. I have to admit though, it would have a striking appearence.

Ah, it's all good, isn't it?

What Munk said...

I was thinking a Khukuri is a big crooked knife primarily suited to chopping things. a folding knife, even Maxx, or Sifu sized is just going to have mechanical limitations. What I've been envisioning is just another folding knife, albeit, a bit harder to sharpen.

The picture though...it is very nice looking, and perhaps something I might want some day just because, even if I don't use it.

Ed Schempp is a talented designer and Spyderco rarely builds non-functional designs. I'll be real interested to see what they come up with together.

I really like the idea of a folding khukuri...even just for fun. A khukuri-balisong too (already exists).

But I've not seen too many I've liked. I've even tried designing a few myself in CAD. Really hard to resolve how the blade sits in the handle.

With an upswept persian...the blade and (dropped) handle are a perfect match.

I don't have a problem with the blade being a khukuri shape...there are plenty of recurve knives on the market...

Just the handle.

The other thing that concerns me...whenever I see a khukuri-shaped object...I imagine chopping with it. (call me pavlovian...) And I haven't seen one I'd trust in chopping chores.

So, I'd almost rather it was designed in a way that made me not want to chop with it....:foot:

Maybe that's why I like the Skirmish....???....Has a nice recurve, but doesn't make me want to chop with it. **shrug**

i definitely agree with all those statements about the usability and it was the reason for my last sentence :)

what interest me is more to see the result of all those efforts and the type of knife that will be produced, i am sure that they work with the 'usability' factor in mind,

anyway, wanted to share that piece with the kuk-nuts around here :)

You're right about the designers. Great minds at work on this one for sure. Looking back, I never would have thought the Spyderco Shabaria would be worth a darn. I finally got one, and it's turned out to be a fantastic slicer with alot of good "tactical" qualities to it. Too bad my wife swiped it as a designated gardening knife....:grumpy:

Sal once mentioned making a mega folder. THAT is something I'd still like to see! a mega folder khukuri?:D

This was fairly close. The extended blade guard would fold into the handle to reinforce the massive liner lock. All it needs is a cho and bannana shaped spine.
