Guys, as I've gotten more ancient I've noticed that the hills where I live keep getting steeper & taller. Been thinking about how to lighten up on the gear for dayhikes. I always carry my 15"AK & sometime back I posted about alternatives for the karda/chakma loops. My latest idea has been to make a handle for a cerroferium [sp?] rod to fit one of the loops, a 2 1/2 " piece of hacksaw blade fits between the loops. Now I have a good way to make fire. I think I'll keep the chakma in case I need to touch up the khuk's edge, a SAK does small blade duty. A GI canteen with a coil of paracord under the cup rides on the other side. Appropriate clothing, a couple snickers bars & I'm good for all day.
Merry Christmas

Uplander another possible way to maybe lighten your load depending on how heavy your 15" AK is would be to replace it with a lighter 16"- 18" BGRS or one of the lighter 17" Foxy Follys.
IMNSHO either one of these kukris will chop as well or better than the AK and especially if convexed edge is made more acute and a bit further up the blade.
But it depends on how fanatical you are about cutting the weight you carry; some of the backpacking group go way overboard IMO but since I haven't been there and done that I can't speak from experience.
If I were I might be as fanatical as some of them folks are about cutting weight. :o ;) :D

Rather than keep the chakmak, why not replace it with a small handled file? Grind/stone down one edge or one side so it's smooth, and can be used as a steel, the file teeth should be able to sharpen the kukri if necessary, and the file makes a good striker on a firesteel and can be used to shave mag chips off a mag block and strike that as well.

Yvsa, I've got a BAS that's some lighter, but there's a kind of presence about my AK that makes me feel vaguely uncomfortable if I'm in the woods without it.
Cpl P, that file idea is good. I'll play around some with it. I've used a mag block some but prefer a firesteel.
Not very long ago [it seems] I could shoulder a 50 lb ruck & hump it uphill all day & do it again the next, ect. I can still hike pretty good but I can't pack the load. Time takes it's toll but I can still outwork, outshoot & outsmart a lot of guys I know who are younger than me so I guess I shouldn't complain.
