How sharp are HI Khukris generally when you receive them, and if they're not all that sharp does anyone have any tips on sharpening them, or Khukris in general, without the use of a grinder. I have one of their biltongs, which I need to get a better edge on, and hope one day to have more of their products. I also have an old (WWII?) Khukri which I got at an antique shop a few years back that I'd like to fix and sharpen up as a user. Thanks.

Most of the time the khuks come with a functional edge, but that's just slightly on the sharper side of butterknife dull;) However, i have gotten a few that already had a bur raised on them that only took a little stropping to bring it to razor sharpness. If you ask most of the regulars sharpening is half the fun of getting a khuk. You really seem to bond with the knife as you turn it over and over in your hands and bring the hidden edge out.

Like yourself, i don't have access to powertools...yet. I will once i get my garage stocked up. I like to put convex edges on my khuks so i start out with one of those foam sanding bricks and just strop the edge while i'm watching TV for an evening (assuming that it is pretty dull). That brings out the rough convex shape. Then i move onto sandpaper. 400, 600, 1000. I just tape a piece to the sanding block and go to town. In between each grit I'll give the blade a couple licks with a butcher's steel. Finally i strop it on an old leather belt. Not as sharp as what Dan Koster and rest of the gang can get 'em, but mine are razor shape once i'm done.

Try doing a seach for sharpening and looking the FAQ sticky. Lotta good sharpening info there.

Enjoy:)!

The ones I have got have ranged from fairly dull, to cutting myself so bad I had to go to the ER when I opened the box and mishandled the blade ;)

Most of the ones I have bought recently have been fairly sharp brand new. Not shaving but close :D
