Khukris for hiking

I am looking for a Khukris that is light weight but has sufficient blade length for clearing trail. I notice that a lot of the blades are very thick which might get a little tiring after a long walk.

Also a concern for me is the handle style. I have read a review of a HI knife where they had a problem with the raised ring on the handle. They found it uncomfortable after a while. I just want something non-slip and comfortable.

Thanks for your help!

I think for hiking I wouldn't go larger than 15". A BAS is perfect IMO.

When the say 15 inches, they are talking about the blade length right? Not the overall length.

Welcome Gump. :)

It depends on what kind of trail clearing you are going to be doing. For bigger diameter wood, then i would go with a chopper like an 18" AK, WWII, or GRS. If you are going to be clearing out mostly vines and sapplings and the like, then a 21" Gelbu might do just fine. If you are going to do a little bit of both, you might ask Yangdu if she has any beefy 20" Sirus in stock. It won't chop wood like an AK, but it will take a beating. However, it will whip fast enough to take down brush.
As far as the handle ring goes, I would ask for your khuk to have a wood handle. That way, if the ring bothers you, you can sand it down a little easier. However, give the ring a chance. it'll grow on ya!...plus it'll keep your fingers from sliding forward onto the blade when your hands get sweaty:eek:

Yep, the BAS would get my vote. 15" overall length and 18-21 oz. Good for light to moderate chopping and (with a good edge) fast enough to clear tall brush.

16" BGRS, 16" bojpure, 16" wwII & 15" BAS... all of these well suit you well and come fairly light :)

Another vote for the venerable 15 inch BAS for trail use. The 15 inch OAL will yield you about a 10 inch blade.

A 10" blade seems very small for trail clearing. People often use machetes to do that and their blades are much longer. I was thinking I would need at lease a 15" blade minimum.

Yes, but machetes are also flimsy . . . the BAS is not.

But, if you aren't comfortable with a 10" blade, go for the 18.5" WWII . . .

18.5" wwII... that would be a pretty rare or custom offering :p
if you want a 15" blade/21" OAL but something light i would consider a gelbu special/chitlangi/siru

of course you would be sacrificing chopping power with the above... but they would still be comparable to a BAS as far as chopping goes anyway :D

Get the villager BAS with sisau wood handle.
