Khukris...I shouldn't have

I've always wanted a Khukri, they are very cool looking and they excel in their performance at almost any task. Well everyone in my family is asking and looking for christmas gifts already, and I thought I'd throw it out there that I wanted a khukri. Turns out my dad has never heard of these knives. I showed him a few pictures of a few that peeked my interest. Later that night he calls me over to look over a few models he liked. It looks like I got him hooked...to the point that hes thinking about carrying one on his side for work :) So now I'm seriously looking at getting myself and my dad one.

I've done some looking in the past, and I think I like the 12 inch blades. Being shorter in stature (a few inches shy of 6 foot), I dont think a full 15 inch blade would suit me well. But my dad is just over 6 foot, so do you think a 15 inch would fit him? I know how to 'fit' a knife to a person, but I'm not 100% sure how to fit a khukri to someone. Hes looking at this one while I like the more traditional looking one

I'm also looking for a decent place to shop. I've heard good things about the nepalkhukurihouse.com. Do they sell reliable knives?

Ive got a Gk & Co 10 and a half inch bladed kukri, i like it well enough but im probably gonna trade it off on here soon. I have bigger hands and it seems a bit small in the handle for me.

If you have smaller hands they are a good option as well.

I'm about 1/4" under 6' and 200lbs or so. I've been interested in trying a khukuri for a while now.

I just bought my first and I am very pleased with it. It's a bit over 15" total length and 20 ozs. I think it fits me very well. Himalayan Imports, on the forum, makes a very nice product and they have a line of "villager" (as in a utility knife that an actual Nepalese person might carry to do stuff) knives that are fully functional workhorses but are very reasonably priced because they don't really put much effort into cosmetics. Great way to start out IMO, it's what I did.

Himalayan Imports is the real deal. Great quality, forged and handcrafted in Nepal for everyday use (not collecting !) by local bladesmiths. Nice people all the way at customer service, too. The kukri is blade heavy by design. If you're not comfortable with that go with a shorter blade or a lighter long blade (Sirupati). They have choice to boot. Their website is not integrally up to date. Take contact and inquire, they do answer and will do their best to please you.

When Himalayan Imports talks about an 18" kukri, they measure from blade tip to the far end of the handle. Subtract about 5" to gauge the blade size.

I have several work knives and a few meat knives that are lighter and easier to handle. I'm getting a khukri because I want a larger/heavier blade to swing around.

This is nice to know.

I've seen some of these knives (doing random searches) and they are 175 and 1095 steel. Should I stay away from these knives? Since this a larger knife, I would think that you should only use 5160.

Hi pal, I'm about 5' 6" with 64 kg body and yes, the 12" Khukuri is just nice and fast in my hand.
Here is the picture of my HI 12" Dhankuta rehandle by Terry Cisco.

Unluckily my compact camera was kaput and in the repair shop now, so I couldn't show you any of my 15" models :(
Still IMVHO the HI 15" Sirupati is great in hands for field works :)

Here is my HI 18" WW II (i.e. standard offer) which I think a bit on the heavy side.
No doubt it's a great chopper!

IMHO any HI standard offer Khukuri with OAL more than 15" is considered as a bit heavy unless it's a special order whereby you should specify the thickness of the spine to about 1/4" only :)
Any HI 12" and the 15" OAL Khukuri is just comfy as a belt Khukuri!
Hope this info helps :)

When Bura was around he made some asian sized khuks and he might not know who Mohd was but Mohd sure is the luckiest chap in this world in Bura's mind.

I am the new owner of a very pretty 14 Inch Panawal Ganjawal Kukri :)This thing is one intimidating beast. I love how you can see the tooling marks and see how the blade was shaped, it just has so much character. I've got to find a way to carry this thing around :)

That looks awesome  I really like the handle on that one. Congratulations!

Nice khuk, I also have a khuk from EGKH and like it, just wait you just can't stop at one, before long you'll have another keeping your first company. I suggest a Himalayan Imports, Tora, and one from The Khukuri House in that order. Enjoy your cool new blade!
