So today I received my (first) khukuri. Lovely thing. No too long, not too heavy, and not too light nor short as well, it just fits. :-)

So here some noob questions:
I supose that the best way how to cut with it is a straightforward axelike way, no drawing (pulling)? The handle is rather short so I assume that the correct holding is a full fist?
Correct me please if I'm wrong.

What are the small knives for, is the blunt one some kind of a sharpening device?

And how do you sharpen yours?

Anyway how a wonderfull toy I got today :-)

Whoof. I'm just not expert enough to write out answers to some of these. I grip mine loosely and use a snapping motion with my wrist. Cliff Stamp has a cutting technique thread currently in the HI section. The small knives are the Karda, a skinning knife, and the Chakma, a sharpening/realigning knife. I use a belt sander with a slack belt to sharpen mine. Some guys use a mousepad with sandpaper on it. Some guys use ceramic rods. I'm better at handle repair questions than these. I'm sure there'll be much more knowledgable guys around soon. Till then, go read that cutting technique thread. Here is the link.

about twenty times. It's been said that the khukuri will teach you how to use it if you listen. I think there's something to that as each one is different. Even for the same model weight and balance can vary quite a bit. Just go slow until you have a feel for it. When you're tired, stop (see safety thread). In no time you'll be chopping like a pro. So, which one did you get? And what's your next one going to be?;) Oh, and welcome to the nut house.

It's a 13,5" Katunje, it feels fine in hand. During weekend I suppose I will test it on some twigs. I will have to sharpen it a bit. If I manage, that is. I want to use it as often as possible to get familiar with it. As for the nut house... being an archery nut and a gun nut already... might get more nutty that I can handle soon :-)
