Hello everybody!

Greetings from Russia.
I own a Gurkha Khukuri WWII replica knife and going to buy one as a present to a friend o'mine. I've heard that Gurkha soldiers mark/engrave their contract effective date on the blade of the khukuri. Does anybody know the anything about the subject:
1. Is it commonly used practice?
2. Do they use Nepali calendar dates?
3. Is the mark/inscription made in Nepali (e.g. 2066 Bhadra 14 ) or else?

Thank you for your time and help,

Alexander

Kronckew is the one who may be able to fully answer your question, Largo. Perhaps some others as well. There are a few historians and scholars in the Cantina. He'll be along to respond in relatively short order, I'd imagine.

In the meantime, Welcome.

it would make a collectors life a lot easier if they did so mark them.

none of mine have a date on them. in general some have western calendar dates on them, some do not have dates. i've seen some regimental issue markings on the blade & spine, but i know of no tradition to mark the individual gurkha's contract date on the blade. the International Kukri Research & Historical Society at www.ikrhs.com has a multipage thread on blade dates, correct ones and forgeries of same that may be of interest.

spiral & berkley are better placed to answer this tho.

Hello once again, folks!

thank you for your help here.
I've desperately tried to contact IKRHS.COM but for some reason they do not have any "contact us" button/link on the site, while they're encouraging every guest with "please contact IKHRS.COM" phrases :))
Maybe something's wrong with my broweser or my brains or else, but I had very little luck wi 'em yet :))

Best regards,

Alexander

I just registered for IKRHS, myself, and I agree that the process is a bit roundabout. Aparently, you sign on by sending Berkley a message at registration@ikrhs.com, with your preferred username, your email, and why you want to join. Then, he emails you back your new password.

Once you're in, though, you're in.:D

I new the problem are my reading and comprehansion skills :))
Thank you for guiding through, Nikolas!

another place to try is at the ramanon forum, there is a thread there on 'marks?' in the 'big blades' sub-forum.

Linky

it's updated in this thread

it's a more generic forum with looser rules, a lot of us hang out there in our less sober moments. :)

2 Kronckew

Here's the answer (or answers) I've jis' recieved from KukriHouse customer service officer:
"1. Is it commonly used practice?
- Yes it is commonly practised in the army. The armymen engrave the date of recruitment on blades.

2. Do they use Nepali calendar dates?
- No they use English Dates.

3. Is the mark/inscription made in Nepali (e.g. 2066 Bhadra 14 ) or else?
- The inscription is made in English date indeed."

So now WE ALL KNOW :)))))

Speak to you soon,

AB
