Khukuri FAQ

A "links' section for good info elsewhere,
like the HI pages, and other.

Thanks Uncle Bill.

DDean -

thanks for the suggestion. there are two sections near the bottom - Misc. Links (essentially just maps of Nepal) and 'Moved Pages'.

The 'Moved Pages' is sort of like your idea of HI links. Do you think instead of 'moved pages' (the idea here was that some things from the FAQ have been integrated into the main HI site, but I was keeping some links on the FAQ so that people could still find these sections from the FAQ main page).....to start again, do you think that it would be better to relabel this as something else (like 'HI pages) and include other HI links?

Also, have you (or anybody else) other ideas for off-site links (meaning non-HI links)? which would be appropriate for the Khukuri FAQ (the main HI site has its own links page of course.

I second the medal reccomendation. I was just in there tonight since things were REALLY slow at work, that has to be one of the most complete and interesting FAQs I have ever read. It's truly staggering how much information is available through HI, both on the site and here on the forum.

Clarity
Simplicity

I think you have the basics down.

Is the FAQ an independent document?

Or is it a 'clearinghouse' for all khukuri info?

If independent,
then create link to another page with Related Links.

If clearinghouse,
then create appropriate headings and keep all links
under the appropriate heading:

The Khukuri
BirGorkha & Himalayan Imports: kamis, biographies,......
Writings: Books, articles, reviews, stories, essays,....
Maps
History: Nepal, Gorkhas, .....
Galleries
......

Old & moved don't really work as headings
(though I understand why you use them)
It would be clearer to simply use 'Other' as a heading.

Thanks for all your work organizing this for us all.

Beo, is there a home for / and/ or/ do you want images of other Gurkha stuff like insignia etc. If so I have a reasonable badge, button collection of Gurkha items I could send you to kick the ball off , No problems if its not whats wanted Rod

Beo, great job, as always!

The amount of info there is what really got my heart into Khuks. Theres just no other way to put it. The pictures of the Kami's manufacturing the blades from salvaged springs really amazed me. All the info provided shows alot of dedication to these products, their history, and the makers. About the coolest knife-related website i've ever seen.

I'll keep my eyes open for anything that may be usefull to add. :)

Added more links/re-arranged material as suggested by ddean.

Rod - yes, I'd be interested to see what you have for insignia and such

thanks again all,

Beoram,
You are doing an Awesome job!:D  I for truly appreciate the ease of access to all of that great info. Thanks!!:D

Hi Beoram, Great Job!
Maybee just a personal thing, but I think that although all those links are usefull, To me it would appear better if there was a separate links page, rather than a long list of links on the front page, & I would definatly like to see more Gurkha photos, insignia etc. That may even bring in new clients for HI as well from militaria buffs looking for gurkha info.etc.?
Regards,
Spiral

Well done, Beoram! I am pleased to see you bringing your orginizational and editorial skills to this material.

Let's not forget that it was our friend Howard who started this FAQ and put in many hours of great work. He deserves our thanks and appreciation.

Yes, I've been mainly just re-organising and making minor edits; the substance of the compilation of the FAQ is Howard's work.

thanks for the feedback. I was thinking about this myself. I'm still pondering exactly how to organise these. Another possibility which suggests itself is reformatting the index page into two columns.

to all - are there any more Nepal-related or general knife/blade-related links that anyone thinks should be added?

Probably lots......but not right now.

How about a link on the page for suggesting new links. :D

Page is looking great!
And, thanks Howard, for the original work.

Adding another page with offsite links would cut down the scrolling.
Another option would be to build a heading index at the top
that links/jumps to the headings beneath.
Double or triple columns could be nice.

My preference is for no scrolling at all.
Maybe you could optimize the index pages to fit entirely
inside a 1024x768 window with no scrolling.
That size is probably is probably a good minimum
for -most- people these days.

Maybe a project that people could take on themselves
would be to edit/summarize threads of interest on a given subject.
Then the edited summary could be submitted to you or whoever
is taking care of the FAQ.
Perhaps after first posting it for general review & comments.
I'm sure there are a lot of topics that could be added to the FAQ.
