Hey everyone, I am new to the Khukuri blade and I need some help picking one out.
I've always been a hatchet man. Give me a good hatchet and a decent belt knife and I as good to go. However I have decided to branch out and give the khukuri a try. Well, I am also going to pick up a Ranger Knife too :)
But back to the khuk...there is so much info here that I have no idea where to begin. I really just need a suggestion on a good khukuri for someone who has never had one before.....note, I do like large fixed blades and hatchets :)
Thanks guys.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a herd of cedars rapidly taking over some hill pastures and think that a good CAK would be a perfect tool to limb these up far enough for ax access and to rogue out the smaller ones.

From your handle I would assume you would reach for your Imbel, Steyr, or FN.

welcome on board. in the last month we've had several such requests and such... i would suggest hitting those and reading up!

that said, get a stout CAK, AK, GRS, or even GS for your limbing goodness in 18 inch range (20 for the GS) and have at. you won't be sorry.

that's of course for limbing and light to medium chopping and such, cedar? yah, a GS will eat those. pretty solid blade for it's skinny nature, and it'll slice and dice just fine. the WWII is pretty good too, but you'd be happier with something more choppy i think. less than 16 inches, and not so happy for choppy.

i'd reccy an M43 or samsher, but honestly, you PROBABLY won't snag one of those unless you outright order it. those are good all arounders as well, but lately people are gahgah for them :)

hey, there's a NICE 18 inch BDC on the DOTD today - that would work.

read the safety thread. bring your axe. have fun with the trees :)

oh yeah, i forgot this:
17 inch 27 ounce Bojpuri (WW?) by Vim Bhadur kami. Horn handle. Field sharp. $95 delivered.

that's a deal on a good looking chopper matic.

plus there's some for sale in the production/individual area. many choices. buy. use. chop! go forth!

Bladite, thanks for the helpful input. You replied nicely to my situation but I hope we haven't hijacked falnovice's thread. I have been reading these posts and the archives for some time now and have benefitted greatly from all the useful information. By the way, I did snag the M43 on the DOTD a couple days ago. Still looking for a heavy CAK for the really tough stuff.

Falnovice, if you tell everyone what you plan to do with a khukri I am sure you will get plenty of good suggestions. A great bunch of folks here and Yangdu is a joy to deal with.

No problem.
What do I intend to do with it? Well, good question. This may become my replacement for both the Becker and the hatchet. I'm up in Maine so that gives you and idea of my enviroment.
I gotta look up all of those abbreviation.
On the HI site there seemw to be a lot of different styles or interpetations.
More reading ahead of me.

Welcome to the forum Falnovice. :)

As for a good starting kukri I would suggest a Baby Ganga Ram Special (BGRS), Chiruwa Ang Khola (CAK), a 15 or 18 inch Ang Khola (Chiruwa or regular), or a 16.5 or 18 inch WWII.

Keep in mind that the kukris are measured in overall length. A 15 inch kukri will have around a 10 inch blade.

i think the understated 15 inch AK is an incredible first khukuri.
in any case, it will not be Your last.

Everybody has a favorite. I suggest the WWII model. I have the 18" model and its great for me. Others prefer the 16.5". I think the real "magic" of the khukris come through at about 16.5-19" no matter what model you get.

I like your style. Get a khuk and a Ranger, and then decide what you need next. Hehehe.

Chiruwa AK is a good choice. I'd personally suggest an 18" GRS. Something in the 28 oz range.

Please remember that even within a given model there will be a range of variance, in weight, thickness and even balance. All handmade makes no two the same. You can call or Email Yangdu and get a rundown of what she has in stock and get a heavier or lighter version of the same model. I have an 18" AK that is on the light side that is my workhorse.

Yes to what Bobwhite said. Welcome to all. And I think you'll be happy with any of the suggestions. One good thing about DOD, and not the least of which is the appealing price, but the length and weight are listed so you know what you're getting.
