Khukuri help

depends on what you want it for.

If you need a curved prybar you don't mind replacing, get a cold steel gurkha. :p

Or if you just want a wall-hanger - check out ebay.

If you want a real user - Himalayan Imports is the way to go.

...every once in a while, you can find a custom knifemaker who will make one. ;)

No doubt. Himalayan Imports. Khukuris I would always trust my life with.

I have used the hell out of my Cold Steel kukri machete, and for only 20 bucks, it is a great knife. I got a CS Kukri LTC from Silverfoxknows(thanks again :)), and have used it sparingly, but so far it is another great performer.

However, from all of the hype, it appears that Himalayan Imports is the best. I am still looking at which model I am going to buy, they look traditional, and too pretty to use, but from all of the praise here, I think I might just buy one, the first one of many ;) .

I prefer Tora kukri to HI ones. I think I'm reopening a can of worms by saying that though

:D :p

Thanks for mentioning them - I've had two Tora khukuris and did like them both.

Khukuris are so inexpensive (compared to custom knives) you could easily afford to buy one of each from each manufacturer and try them all out yourself...and still be under $300 (same price as a nice folding knife).

Only if you fail to say
why you feel that way.

And, you haven't said
which models you've compared.

I haven't held any Tora khuks.
I know most HI khuks are heavier than the traditional models.
And they tend to vary a bit from the purely traditional models.
OTOH, I like most HI blades;
some for use, some for display.
& I semi-collect older khuks.

I have one of the "regimental kukri"
that AtlantaCutlery has been selling for very many years;
it has it's place in the user lineup.

Surprisingly,
when I vinegar-etched the blade to check for differential edge-hardening,
it was.
They make a big point that this model is made
to original military specs.
And the spec sheet enclosed
specifies diff.hardening.
Can't recall how hard the edge comes out.

Thanks for the links, does any one know where Tora gets theirs made, is it another Khukuri House dealer?

I bet you don't.

They're like potato chips.

In my not so humble opinion I tried this http://www.m4040.com/Survival/Ghurka/Khukri Modification.htm
I got a 25$ Kukri off of eBay , made in India , steel is from leaf springs.
The kukri came gaudy looking , like a wall hanger but underneath the chrome and way too shiny brass is a monster of a blade. After a few hours of enjoyable work I had a razor sharp "custom" kukri at a fraction of the cost.
I used it helping my dad clean out a section of his garden earlier this year , small trees and brush , the edge held up nicer than I thought it would.
Easy to be skeptical about something until you try it for yourself. I'd pit my kukri against an HI any day of the week.
Depends on if you like doing it yourself , or buying an allready made product.
