Khukuri House?

Howdy folks-

I'm not over this way much, but I thought I might see if you khuk-ophiles knew much about the Khukuri House? I saw over in a different subforum a fixed blade knife that a fellow had, and then found their website. I was interested in one of their khuks, their 'savior', as a general woods knife...

Is anyone familiar with their general quality level? Thoughts on whether 8" would be enough for some light chopping?

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome Spooky:)

I moved your thread to the HI Cantina which is our little off-topic nook around here since the HI forum is technically for HI stuff, but no harm no foul:)

KH is thought to have fairly good products. They aren't quite up to the fit and finish of HI, but they are just fine as users. However, don't let the pricing confuse you. Remember that if you are here in the states, a $40 khuk will probably cost you close to $80 with international shipping. Also, these blades are handmade which means that if the kami (Nepali blade smith) is having a bad day and it breaks, then you are out shipping again if you need to ship it back. I personally have never had any dealings with KH since I have never had any problems dealing with HI. I'm the kind of guy that comes back again and again as long as I'm being treated right:thumbup:

My biased advise, check out the HI forum around 1 to 3pm central. Yangdu, the fine lady that runs HI, typically posts up deals and blems a couple of times a week. Generally, they have a split scabbard, a tiny rust spot, etc. However, they are fantastic users and come with HI's lifetime warranty as well as a pretty deeply discounted price. Her prices include CONUS shipping, and if you should have a problem with your blade she operates out of Reno, NV so shipping to and fro is generally as swift as 2-3 days (and much cheaper;)).

Once again, welcome!:)

Thanks much! Sorry for the misplaced thread, didn't read those directions too well!

That's a really good point about the international shipping. I had a knife shipped from abroad not too long ago and several aspects were a big headache.

I'll keep taking a look for something from HI, I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing about them.

Do you have any thoughts on length? I wanted something a little smaller to wear on a belt, something like 8-10" ? Not sure if the khuk design becomes useless at that length or not.

Thanks -

12" OAL is about the smallest usable khukuri IMHO. anything smaller just doesn't have the mass to chop well.

Ted is absolutely right. Anything less than 12" over all length loses all of its "Khukiness" and becomes more a bent knife. A 12" khuk will give you about 7"-8" of blade, and IMHO the beefier the better. You're already cutting back on the weight of the knife by shrinking it down from the more standard 15" to 12".

If you want a good "all 'rounder" to start you down the khuk path, check out the 15" AK or BAS. Both of these will come in around 1.5lbs and will be pretty easy to pack. A big honkin' knife? Yes it is:D However, to get the full knife/hatchet/pounder effect you'll need the length and mass. A 15" Khuk will gain you about 10" of blade give or take. :D

Cool guys, that's just the info I was looking for. Might have to keep an eye out for a 12", maybe 15", AK. Thanks much for the help.

If you email Yangdu directly and tell her exactly what you are looking for, she may have a good deal on hand.

I wrote to her and got a 15" Ang Khola Villager model. And I am very pleased with it. In fact it exceeded my expectations, so I've now ordered a 12" (overall length including the handle) Ang Khola.

I have no hesitation in recommending the Himalayan Imports stuff. And I've only heard good things about Yangdu who is the lady in charge.

That isn't to say that other khukuris won't be good, but I prefer to bet on a sure thing.
