I have been seriously considering buying a khukuri knife, I really don’t know why, but I think they look pretty cool, unique and you get a lot of knife for the money. Does the khurkuri have any other uses than just chopping wood? I want to by a quality knife, and would you still advise me to purchase from Himalayan Imports? I have to be honest, I checked out KHHI and I like some of their designs, particularly their more modern handle designs. Just to let you know what I’m interested in is the 15” AK from H.I. and the KHHI Max (Xtreme). Any advice from you that have experience with these style of knives would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Welcome!

I think you've got a good first choice there. I say first, because you'll discover rather quickly once you get an HI in hand, that you need more. You may also find yourself hanging around this forum a lot, attempting to shark deals of the day (DOTD). KHHI makes nice products, to be sure. But there's a lot to be said about HI, and naturally, since you're posting in this subforum, you should expect plenty of happy HI customers.

Modern handle designs are all very well and good, but there's a reason the handles are still the way they are. Besides, you could always do a custom order through HI also, if you find you need something else.

Khuks can be used for virtually anything. Just look at the folks who use them for real; khuks get used for so many different tasks. They're incredibly versatile.

When you get your first HI, be sure to post up pics, and don't forget to read the safety thread.

My first and only khukri is this 15" H.I. AK.

It's great. Sure it chops, but it also has an edge that cleanly shaves hair from my forearm. It makes for a decent drawknife, and can handle notching and basic utility carving for bushcraft tasks. I wouldn't feel bad at all about hitting the woods with my H.I. khukri and a swiss army knife.

As stated above, khukri can be used for nearly anything, though what it excels at depends greatly on the model, length, and weight. If you know how to keep the edge clean, you can use even the heaviest of models to prepare fish OR chop firewood. Do you have any particular purpose in mind for your knife?

I owned the McCoy from KH. The blade was pretty good, but the sheathe and handle left... a lot to be desired. I bought a "blem" here from the Deal of the Day as a gift for a sweet old country girl last year and I have to say everything about it was perfect. The Salyan was a gorgeous and enchanting blade that possessed a beautiful finish, strong build and good edge, a comfortable handle, and a seemingly forward impetus. The sheathe was ideal as well.

Now having broken one of my house knives my family gave me(hooray?!), I've got an Ang Khola on the way as a replacement. I have no doubts or fears. The blades offered on this site are of fantastic quality. Hope that helps you decide.

15 inch Ang Khola hands down. All those fancy named KHHI models are just catchy titles. And also remember, the fancier the blade the less likely it will stand up to real work.

I guess what I'm looking for in a large knife, is a one-to-go-knife that would stand up in field conditions, and provide self defense if need be. I quess I could buy a large Busse, but I don't want to spend several hundreds dollars. I think the Khurkuris are a good buy for what you get.

Couple more questions about the AK. What type of handle material, wood or horn would be more durable, and any recommendations who could make me a custom leather sheath for the AK.

Thank you for your replies everyone, most helpful.

the 15" AK is the most versitile knife that I own, either horn or wood will be very durable, I personally prefer wooden handles as I think they are more comfortable when chopping, but youll find people that prefer either one. I would also suggest getting a villager fit and finish for a knife destined to hard use, it makes cleanup a tad easier and the handle will come a bit more grippy, though there are merrits to the mirror polish blade and handle. wildmanh makes great leather sheaths

Hello WPM and Welcome to the Forum.
The 15" AK is a great choice for your planned use. Besides the other uses mentioned, you can dig with it. The handles are quite comfortable and my preference leans to the wood handle, though the horn are fine. Please, come back and post after you get one and let us know what you think. Post some pictures, too, and show off a bit.

Hi WPM,

Please practice safety whilst drawing the khuk as well as clearance you need when chopping. Treat it like you are using a hatchet and khuk will serve you efficiently.
Tell us how you feel. Pics would be lovely.

one other thing to consider, especially if you are in the americas or even europe, is that khukuri house ship from nepal, so their shipping charges are a lot higher that auntie's. add blade cost & shipping and their apparent lower price ain't so low anymore. their quality, while good, doesn't match HI's, and HI's customer service can't be beat. if you do have to ship anything back, again, shipping back to auntie yangdu is a LOT cheaper and more dependable than shipping back to nepal.

Hey John, don't take this the wrong way, but you have beautiful fullers! Nice pics.

Hi All,

I about ready to purchase the 15" AK with the a villiage fit and finish with a wood handle. My question is, do I specify this satin finish in the comment section on the H.I. website when ordering? Or do I need to do this over the phone.

Thanks,

WPM

My recommendation would be to email Auntie and let her know what you'd like. She's taken really good care of me, and she can help make sure you get exactly what you want.
