Im really loving these Himalayan Imports blades and im thinking of picking one up but I have a question for all you experts out there. Im looking for a khukuri that is definitely going to be a user, probably not going to chop and large trees or anything like that, medium size branches maybe. But mostly looking for a khukuri that I can take out hunting and to use for getting through bone and such, im thinking something like a 12-15 inch would be sufficient for this task? Anyone with experience in this such thing or any expert advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated. If anyone could list some options that would be great. Thank you!

I would not recommend using a knife of any kind on bone,as it will most likely chip/dent the edge,if you're out hunting to get through bone either saw it or break it with a stone or something similar, thats what i always do,meats still good,as for which kuk dirtbiker has the 2 best ones suited for you since you dont want a big one.On a side note im very excited i just got a 20" CAK in the mail today, cant wait to go out into the field with this beast :D

There was a thread on this forum a few months ago about the hardness of bone and how it can damage the edge of any knife, even butcher's cleavers. Don't be misled by the name of the "bonecutter" model.

Someone pointed out that you can reverse your khukuri and use the thick spine to break any bone that you need to reduce to smaller pieces. Many or most khukuris have a spine that is not flat but is shaped like an inverted "V" (a blunt wedge shape) which would be ideal for breaking bone and not vulnerable like a sharp edge.

I suppose that would still involve some risk to the steel, but not much, and it would be more effective and convenient than using a rock.

I suspect that the wedge shape of the spine was designed for just this kind of usage, since it would probably be easier to make a blade with a flat spine.

I would also suggest not using the edge on bone. It really isn't designed for such abuse:) David is right, the spine is a much better bone breaker.

For any kind of chopping chores, I would gravitate toward the 15" Khuks over the 12". Keep in mind that the length posted is over all length. Not blade length. I absolutely love the 12-13" khuks. I generally pack a 12" Siru or 13" AK on my person daily. However, they are more of a "bent knife" that chops better than a straight bladed one. However, for the real khuk experience, a 15" AK is probably one of the best do-it-all knives and a fine first khuk:)

The good news, you really can't go wrong:)

Well just pulled the trigger on a 15" AK, can't wait for it to come in! Thank you for all the advice,I'll probably use it for clearing brush and the such. Also what I meant when I said cutting through bone I didn't mean actually like cutting a bone in half, more like chop through the neck to take the head of a dear off. I probably should have specified. Thank you all again for the responses.

Personally my setup as far as tools i take for hunting is my bk2,multi tool, small hatchet(15$ cheap, beat it to hell),and i usually bring out a new piece with me to test out the durability, prying chopping batoning,if i had to take 1 kuk with me,i'd probably take a big one just in case.Good luck on your hunting trips.
