khukuri sharpness

I just ordered my first H.I. Khuk earlier today. It's a 55 ounce 20" Ang Khola with a wood handle, and it was made by Sher. I was wondering, what level of sharpness I can expect it to have when I get it?

Great first choice, John:thumbup::D

Typically, Sher sends his "field sharp". Basically, it'll be sharp enough to do most any big knife chopping chore that you need of it. However, you won't be able to shave with it;) With all that mass, be sure to watch your fingers and toes when you swing it.
You can get a khuk shaving sharp, but for their line of work a nice polished convex edge works best for being strong and wear resistant to chopping.

Please check out the safety thread before you start chopping. All khuks are dangerous, but the 20"+ monsters are very unforgiving. Enjoy!:)

Wow you should be able to make some wood fly with that!

I recently got a 15" version of the same model. It was pretty darn sharp straight out of the box. I used a fine hone stone to remove a slight feather from a small portion of the blade down near the cho...but mostly the blade was in very good shape.

If you don't hit rocks with your blade, it should perform well for a while without any major work.

If you've never played with a khukuri before, but if you are experienced with knives and axes, you may well be amazed at what can be done with what you are getting.

Thanks guys! Man, I can't wait to get this thing, it should arrive on Monday or Tuesday. You know, I actually had a dream last night that someone on BLade Forums came to my front door when it was delivered, and they stole it. I knew it was someone from Blade Forums because they were posting about stealing it. It was a very bad dream....

i am NOT travelling all the way over there to steal your box. but then again.............
