When I get a Khukuri I would like to carry it on my saddle. We ride alot in the high country of the Sierra Nevada and have on occasion had to clear and or blaze trails.
Would I have to modify the sheath or could you make a "Pierce Proof" sheath for me?
Which one would you recommend or is it a bad idea?

Another guy who might be able to give some good input is Jim March who carries various knives on his motorcycle.

I am out of my league with horses and khukuri carry.

Khukuri FAQ

I dropped my 22" AK several days ago. Went right through the leather, between the wood slabs, and split the sheath.

I then made a rather primitive but functional sheath out of a sheet of kydex. I really believe that kydex, molded properly and with the right hardware attachements or cutouts, would be the ideal thing. And not only for saddles; anybody with a need to make a good weather-proof, non "armor-piercing" sheath should talk to somebody who knows how to fashion kydex. (This was my first attempt at making anything out of kydex, btw, and it's not as simple to use as some folks will tell you)

Keep the leather and wood sheath for tradition and "breathable" storage (since kydex is non-permeable, it tends to retain moisture inside near the blade.) and have a kydex rig made to your specs that will give you the carry options you want. or just buy a sheet (usually about $75) and play with it. If it comes out wrong, just reheat it and reuse it. Good luck!

P.S. They only had .060 kydex at my supplier, so i used two layers, which actually worked out better for me. But you can use layering and folding techniques to make the sheath completely safe and "pierce-proof."

I do believe a saddle carry is doable.
I have had an idea of using some brass about 1/16" thick to protect the edge and point from coming through the leather.
The top piece could be fahioned in such a way as to have several "loops" along the edge to use for tieing on purposes and what not.

That's kinda what I have in mind for the special scabbard that I plan on making one of these days.
I want mine to be able to hold a small mag light and another knife such as the Marble's Woodcraft along with a DMT double hone and a good smooth steel.

Terry is definitely the right man to talk to about some kind of a saddle carry!

Thanks, I have Emailed Terry and await a response. TomF, I might consider kydex, but, would rather stick with leather. If and when it is made I will send a sample of the oclor of my tack and the custom conchos that will match what I have on my saddle now. Also thought of some kind of brass or silver on the edge & point.

Look at the brass trim on the scabbard edges in the picture of the Full Chainpuri (center) underneath the mace.

There is no reason brass or kydex ( or sheet steel for that matter ) could not be formed the same way and then covered with leather.

Was in a hurry when I posted the above. But don't forget my dad and my best friend's dad saw things thru a kami's eye. I think of those two making a pierce proof sheathe and I can hear the pop of acetylene torch being lighted to heat, hammer into shape and weld 1/8th" sheet metal

Make a new kydex sheathe and glue the leather onto it leaving just enough to stitch a backseam. Or rasp down the wood of the original and glass cloth it, wet or somehow the leather and pull it on over and let it dry/shrink? Put the Chainpuri style brass over a leather covered scabbard.

It just makes me think of the cop who was killed though his vest defeated a 45 slug to the chest. It was a 45/70 and they figured that it drove over 6-8" deep without going through the vest. Blunt trauma. You might want to consider the consequences of landing on the scabbard even if the edge doesn't cut through it.

My saddle is a Capriola dally roper from Elko,Wade tree. I just replaced the string buttons down from the cantle base with a latigo keeper on the near side and a cinch buckle keeper on the off side. the horizantle slot is good for a sheath and the verticle one is good to put a loop in to pack an axe or hammer. You can make them or buy them from Capriola. Phone #775-738-5816.I don`t see much risk in packing that way. It`s a lot safer than wearing it.

Probably. Had been thinging of it being looped over the saddle horn. And welcome, FNG.

Since I just read the thread on wrapping handles with wire I can't claim much credit for thinking of it, but ... how about wrapping a scabbard with wire? Three or four bands of brass wire would dress up a scabbard and you could wear it to Saturday night dances and to church the next morning and be the cynosure of all eyes.

In fact, why don't the sarkis make them that way in the first place? We could call it the Saturday Night Scabbard. Charge extra for silver wire ... charge a lot extra for gold.

Lots of good ideas, thanks. This blade will be carried on the saddle. Yes my horse and I could fall and then what will really prevent 1000 lbs of horse from forcing a blade through whatever. These are the risks we take with our recreation. There is one friend of mine that caries a chainsaw on his saddle when we go trail cutting. He has a good horse. I feel that one of the Kukuris strapped to my rig would set Smokey and I apart and give me the most awesome tool around. I might consider wrapping with wire. I have a source for nickel wire with Sterling Silver overlay. I might be able to do something creative with that.
