Guys, I was wondering if you could help me please?

Ive decided after many years of a dissapointing Khukuri experience to try again. Yes, I tried one of the those atlanta cutlery models that were awful. That was almost ten years ago, really soured me on the whole khukuri experience. Can you suggest a high quality model that would be good for camping/hiking (doesnt have to be too light, I dont mind a little weight, as long as its reasonable). One that can whittle and still chop really well. With a good fit and finish, well made, etc. around a 15-22" inch. Any help, suggestions, etc. would be grealty appreciated.

Thanks,
Sincerely
John

WWII, M43, or Pen knife....those would be my picks but I'm sure there are others who could give you a more informed selection.

Pick the style you like and go from there. The Ang Khola,WWII, British Army Service ,M-43 Ganga Ram Special,Bonecutter are all great choppers. Find the one that calls out to you. Ask questions and do alot of reading up on the stuff here. We will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I'd look through the forum a bit, especially the pics thread, and find one that calls your name. None really suck at chopping. The Ang Khola excels at it. The M43, WWII, BAS, bonecutters, etc are great. It's really a personal preference thing.

Thanks, I appreciate it guys. One thing I want, is one that will excel at chopping and not be too heavy, or too light. And be able to pack on hikes.

If packable is a requirement you might look at the 15" AK, 16.5" CAK or the 16.5" WWII. I love my 18.5" WWII but it's big. If you're looking at pack carry then one of the 18" khuks might be in order. The longer sirus can chop too, I had a 25" that hit like a ton of bricks but was a bit too much for my girly arms. That said, you can never go wrong with a WWII.

M-43 is the best combination of performance and weight. They chop as well if not better than heavier kukris.

Thanks everyone i really appreciate it. Im thinking of the ww2, or the gelbu special 18".

Also, has anyone ever heard of nepalese khukuri house? They seem to have some reasonable prices, but I wonder what the quality is like?

Khukuri House is junk if you ask me. I sold mine immediately on eBay because they weren't even close to the same quality of HI. No point in spending almost as much for a cheap knockoff when you can get the real deal here. Just wait for a DOTD if you need to save some money.

I'll throw another vote out there for a 16.5" WWII. Had mine out in the yard this weekend to kill some Brazilian Pepper and Ficus and it performed admirably. Doesn't chop as good as the M-43 and doesn't do house/kitchen chores as well as my Katunje Special, but is a great all-rounder that can handle most anything you can throw at it.

If you want a lighter khukuri that still has some good chop, the Chitlangi is the only way to go.

But my opinion is biased.

My picks on a KHUKURI. A M43, WW-II, ANGKHOLA in a 16"-18" size (3/8"-1/2" Thick). Or a 15" BAS as a starter KHUKURI. Please contact AUNTIE YANGDU to see what is "available", or what is due in from NEPAL. Also, the NEW 14" BONECUTTER would also be a very good choice. Please let us know which KHUKURI that you have chosen.

Re: khukuri House:

The prices seem good, until you see the shipping costs. It'll end up costing almost as much as an HI at nowhere near the quality.

HI really is the top of the game.

You can pick up khukuri house on ebay for a decent price now and then, but I would call them a beginners choice, better than Windlass but not up to HI standards. Save up a few extra bucks and get real quality and the best customer service here..

By the time you figure in the Cost of shipping an NKH or a KH product from Nepal to you, the pricing issue becomes a moot point. Also they do not have a customer service or guarantee that is as great as what Yangdu provides and their overall fit and finish does not compare to H.I.'s. Another note is That KH and NKH products are made to fit smaller nepali hands, whereas H.I. specifically make their handles larger to accomodate us westerners and our oversize mitts.

I have an 18" Gelbu that is wonderful. It feels very nimble, yet substantial enough to chop. My 16.5 WWII is a better chopper, though.

I've got a 21" Gelbu, I use it to clear brush, and clear brush it does. As a chopper, it will work, but not nearly as well as my friends CAK.
