A couple of weeks ago I picked up a few tins of Yugo surplus 7.62x54mm. When it came time to break some of it out, I found myself staring at the tin in wonder.

How do I get this thing open? You know me...

I wound up pounding a 16.5" AK through the top with a hammer and levering the spine on the side of the tin as a can opener. It wasn't as fast as I'd like but it did the job. The edge wasn't appreciably affected, although the buttcap is showing some cosmetic damage from me whaling on it with a hammer.

Some time later, I found out that they were supposed to have included a can opener with it. Cndrm (having some spares laying around) graciously provided me with one so I probably won't be doing this again. But, should I have to...

Funny, Dave, same thing happened to me. Same round, too. I tried using a real can opener, and discoverd that the lip of the tin was too tall. I wound up using a cold chisel. Result wasn't nearly as neat as yours.

Next time I ordered, I got the official can openers. It took almost as long to open one of the tins with the 'right' tool as it did with the chisel. Wound up breaking one of them, too. Really cheap pot metal.

Bottom line: if you had to open one of these things quickly on the battlefield, you are pretty much SOL.

If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Nicely done, Dave.

Looks like packetes of opium in that tin...

The NSA has downloaded that pic from the forum and he's now in detention;)

Dave! Dave! Let us know how Cuba is:D

With the historic smuggling of opium out of the Golden Triangle, I'm surprised we don't hear more about folks opening up tins of fish or ammo and finding the noble Poppy fruit instead....though it brings up the point- perhaps not that many people 'tell'. The Mafia smuggled drugs through it's excellent line of Italian tomato products for many years...

On a game, Warcraft, there's a segment where a group of Sasquatch has been discovered, and the animals are debating killing all the people so their whereabouts are not discovered. I'd never thought of that before- there's an argument why no 'traces' have been found, eh?

You mean they smuggle opium out of the Beaumont, Orange, Port Arthur, area(The Golden Triangle), where I live!!!   :D :D :D

Which Warcraft it that in??? I must have missed that!!!

I still have a couple of tins like this of 7.62X39 that have sat unopened for 10 years. The Russian steel case stuff for use in my Mini-30. The guy who sold it to me told me a regular can opener would work just fine and all this time I have left it sealed as I had a couple thousand rounds of some good Korean PMC ammo to use up first. If I had used it I guess I would have figured out PDQ that he was full of it as far as getting it open.

This was from '94 when 7.62 Russian was selling for $90 a thousand, and before Klinton messed with the flow and drove it up to $400 a thousand for a while.
