Who makes a more modern Khukuri? I have seen the ones by cold steel and black jack. I wasn't too impressed with the Cold steel ones. The Blackjack model looked pretty nice but I couldn't tell from the picture what the handle was made of.

Depends on what you mean by "modern". In my opinion, the handmade traditional khukuris made by Himalayan Imports are very "modern" - especially compared to the Atlanta Cutlery pieces.

If, by "modern" you mean "tactical", or "non-traditional"....A.G. Russell has a khukuri - and at least the handle's not kraton....

?

nothing wrong with Atlanta Cutlery's old khukuris....in fact, I consider them very nice.

But they are far more "traditional" than what you see over in the H.I. forum....that's all.

Himalayan Imports makes the best modern khukuris....hands down.

come to the forum and do some reading....perhaps you'll find what you're looking for.

Not so much tactical. Kind of a blend between old and new. I like the finish of the HI khukuris but am not too partial to the handles. No coated blades. Something with a nice thick blade, and maybe a handle like a Busse. I like the grind on the HI's too with that thick bevel running down the cutting edge. A more modern style of sheath in leather. Also must be a user.

I have the agrussell kukri and am happy with it .It weighs 18 oz so it's better for lighter cutting.

I like your thinking there, and a fully modern rendition would be interesting. I have seen some custom makers do similar designs on occasion. The HI khuks are super users and all but they are very "traditional" looking, ie natural handles, spring steel blades, and the scabbards are very traditional looking as well.

I think the point being made is like the difference between a nice old Marbles hunter and a modern "super steel" blade with micarta or G10 handles and a updated scabbard. I think its a matter of taste issue here, theres nothing wrong with the HI product, and nothing wrong with a super steel knife with modern handle materials. In actual performance they would probably end up pretty even, in looks they wouldnt have much in common. I like both the Classic lines of a HI khuk and traditional bowie type knives. I also like the "super steel" mega thick, chop it all, do it all, combat knives as well. They both have their place, just like leather and (ugh) kydex ;)

That's the thing, I would want great steel, maybe a micarta handle with the tang in the full shape of the handle like a busse or Topps. While still keeping the nice mirror polish and clasic grind. Just one real tough SOB of a user khukuri while still keeping a nice look. By the way I am all set with the Krayton handles. I feel that krayton and zetyl look absoulutly terrible as a handle matierial. Even a handle made of wood would be Okay if it were made to be ergonomic and comprised of two scales over a thick slab of steel. I like the idea of handle shaped tangs because if you ever broke one of the scales you could just break out the paracord and good as new.
