As I'm anxiously awaiting my BAS, it occoured to me that I have no clue how these things are used as weapons. I have a background in the Philipino/Indonesian MA's, so I can put just about anything in my hand to good use- but I'm wondering what styles/forms/techniques have developed around the Khukuri specifically. Are there any books, videos, schools?
thanks

DC, if you want me to put you in touch with the Bando people let me know. The khukuri is their weapon of choice.

You'll get a lot of feedback besides this so take your time.

Definitely no books or videos which go into detail regarding Bando. Dr. Gyi apparently doesn't want to see the art commercialized, so there isn't much information (aside from hands-on instruction).

Soldier of Fortune had an article last fall that presented some khukuri techniques.

Your best bet is to see if someone in your area is training or teaching. The people Bill said he could put you in touch with can help.

Dr. Gyi has done khukuri seminars, which might be your best bet. (I don't know if Bando is similar to other arts, which only introduce weapons training after a period of empty hand study. I personally like the FMA philosophy when it comes to weapons training.)

Uncle,I would welcome any bando advice but,it seems to me that weapons make themselves known to you.I mean this in a Zen sense.

DC Potts, I think you'll be okay. I agree with Ghostsix, the weapons will make themselves known to you.

Last night, I had a dagger class. I study primarily Asian arts but we're not afraid to look at the Euro styles too. I used a straight double edged dagger and Indian Khanjar, my teacher his Katar. Do we feel we're violating any rule? No.

Sometimes we play with sabres and his beautiful Persian mace. Concerning using any object as a weapon I believe that's part of another concept in any ancient weapons art.

Being able to use any sword or fully fledged weapon to use. I happen to think the Mace and Khukri to be a similar in that if you really mess up at full power you could reward yourself w/ your arm ripped out of your socket w/ torn ligaments.

Neat post, Smoke. Damage can be severe if you are using 20 inch AK or 38 inch Janawar Katne khukuris.

You know that the khukuri was tried in Australia over a century ago with miserable results. They could never figure out a safe way to catch them on the return flight and suffered many decapitations and lost arms.
I guess they should have been told that they were knives and not steel boomerangs.

I have several Aussie customers and they do not use the khukuri as a boomerang! They have it all figured out by now.

The first time I pulled a khukuri from the scabbard it felt different. Now after 1,000 or + times it feels normal. After practicing with them slowly in Martial Arts forms, you get to know them a little better. Each time I pick one up and handle it I learn something.. When you really enjoy a certain subject, the learning becomes automatic.

I think I need to go back to the Filipino MA before I try to catch any Bando seminars. I read that Dr. Gyi prefers advanced FMA practicioners in his seminars, and the new khukuri has shown me just how rusty I am. The "blade-forward" weight of the khukuri is revealing that my wrists have weakened considerably in the years that I've been away. I can use it (dry dead trees are no match for my deadly skills!

) and apply forms, but my wrist starts aching within a few minutes.

If someone could post or email me the issues of SOF that the khukuri articles were in, I'd be most appreciative.

Hi Uncle Bill,I`m not sure that I deserve such high praise, but I`m much obliged. My Great,Great,Aunt Carol, who disscussed Buddhism with me,would be very pleased. I think that I actualy do get it.I can`t allways let go the ego,and some times,I should not.

Nice post, Jay.

DC, that info lies somewhere in this forum but who knows where. I think Phil Squire has the info and may help us out.

Ghostsix, knowing the truth is important, being humble about it is perhaps more important.

Uncle Bill

It is a Norski thing. To the Viking, the individual is all important, not the group.Much different than eastern philosophy.
