Has anyone here purchased one of their blades before. I'm looking to buy a khukuris but I don't have the money for a HI. KHUKURIS House sells models alot cheaper than HI. If anybody has delt with this company please fill me in on the quality and if buying a blade from them would be worth it. I need your help!!

Welocme:)

There are a lot of people here on the HI forum that have khukuris from KH. However, don't let the prices mislead you. While they ARE cheaper in a retail sense, the shipping from Nepal to the CONUS is pricy. If you live in the US, then you might consider sticking around for one of Yangdu's Deals of the Day threads. Basically, she offers specials, blems (cosmetic issues like small cracks, discoloration, or tiny rust spots), and one-of's are great prices. They are hit and miss through out the week.

Welcome!:)

Products are cheaper for a reason. There is no free lunch.

I do not understand how a Khukuri House product could be much cheaper than a DOD here- and regardless how much, the product will not be as usefull over a period of time.

Some of my tools are made in China, but the ones I count on aren't. I have to count upon quality when I'm swinging the blade in the woods. I dont' want a failure, and I dont' want injury, and I really don't want to mess with replacing blades all time.

Some people have had good luck with some of the other less expensive vendors. There have also been a lot of culls and paperweights sold. I'm not trying to trash anyone or company, but you do get what you pay for, and HI's are the best, at the most reasonable price possible.

Sheesh. I ought to write ad copy!!

maybe I just did.

I have several of them but they are just for use in some martial arts classes and I consider them throw aways and don't care if they get scratched or the handles break or if they rust (and they do). So if its just to have one and you have no real use for it then buy them. They are better than a lot of the junk on ebay.
A Hi blem is worth more and if you deside you don't want it you can sell it fast for what it cost the others you won't get your money back.

I have just one KH from before I can afford HIs, HI are built for hard use and KH IMHO is more like a tourist piece. Won't last as long as Hi and Yangdu stands by her products. Save up for a HI WWII, till today I hav rely on it for all heavier duties and never fail me.

You can:

1. Get what you can afford now, and use it as long and as well as you can. (Read the safety thread, regardless of what you get.)

2. Postpone purchase until you can afford what you decide is the right khukuri for your uses, real or imagined.

3. Buy some astonishing momuments to junk on eBay and be disappointed in both the utility of this type of edged tool and in the quality of its manufacture.

Most of us have done all three of these at one time or another.

However, this is an H.I. forum, and as such, there will be a predisposition to favor what we consider to be the best of the bunch.

Be well and safe.

Thank you all for the incite, I appreciate all comments. I have one other question about HI. I have noticed the tangs of the blades are small. Are they durable and does the handle break loose at all? Once again thanks

We'll try not to incite you too much!
The tangs aren't small- you just see the tip, the end peened at the buttcap.
Regular triangular tang, not a 'rat tail'. Strong.
A chiruwa style blade has a wider tang, with two handle slabs. The Chiruwa AK is thought to be the strongest by many. Bill used to offer two in replacement in the rare event one would ever break.

I have never had a handle even come loose on any including the blems.

I've thought about getting a KH for martial arts practice. I just couldn't bear to grind the edge off an HI. You find that the KHs work well enough for that?

Thanks!

I posted this last time someone asked about the durability of the handles. This is from a guy who was modifying his khuk and trying to take the handle off. See how it went for him:

the possum said:
I used a hatchet to split the handle wood, and further used the poll to smash it. Even with the wood splintered it would not let go of the tang. With lots more effort I was finally able to remove most of it, but it did not pop off from the epoxy- the wood broke leaving a coating of fibers still embedded on the tang and pieces in the bolster. I started using a hammer to break off the epoxy, but it refused to just chip off. So I tried burning it off with a propane torch. I burned the wood fibers out but it still wouldn’t let go. I had to use a hammer and chisel to get enough out of the bolster to remove it, and then finally had to grind off the excess with a dremel. If a hatchet, hammer, chisel, grinder, and a friggin’ blowtorch have a hard time getting the handle off, I don’t think you have to worry about it flying off on its own.

I love that quote! :D

Yes and you don't cry after goinding them down or rounding the tip, the shape is a little off though on the standard army issue a little too straight. I also have a few of those tourist ones with the dotted bone handles I bought a box of them for $2 each. They get used by the newer students.

I have two KH khukuris.

I got them for $5 each, a Service One and a 16" Ak. Even between the two there are major differences in Quality. The AK someone spent alot of time on with the fit and finish, very nice. The S1 looked like it came from Central Issue, it was rougher and the polish job wasn't as complete and the scabbard frog RIPPED the first time I drew it from my belt.

The blades passed UBs WACK DA HELL OUTA IT testing phase and the edges hold up well to pine and Desert Iron wood. I did hack on a couch with the AK and it managed to find two staples and roll the edge a lil, it fixed up fine.

I just blued both blades. I DO NOT like horn handles tho, they shrink, it bugs me.

There was an incident on my patio a few weeks ago. I thought I heard someone stealing my ladder! What did I grab? Not my pistol, I grabbed my 16" AK laying next to the pistol and went out to investigate.:)

I trust my KH Khuks.

Chazbo88,

I had a couple of KH's Operation Iraqi Freedom Khukris, and they were pretty good knives, but gave them to friends that were Khukri-less. For me, the low price of the blade was definitely offset by the cost of shipping from Nepal, via DHL... Personally, I'll do business with Mrs. Martino, and be delighted... Her service is measured in arrival dates measured in hours, rather than a week plus... Like Munk and Robert Heinlein said, TANSTAAFL, "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch..." You DO get what you pay for... I can think of several firms that sell Khukuris on the 'Net, but IMHO, NOBODY does it as well as, or better, than HI and Mrs. Martino...

Regards,

Carter

When the khukuri bug bit me in 2004, I also looked around and hesitated a lot before my first purchase.
Finally I decided to buy a Himalayan Import Deal of the Day (HI DOD) khuk. I thought even this was expensive and that would be the only khuk I will ever buy.

I was wrong. After receiving the first, I realized that for the price Uncle Bill and now Yangdu are giving them away, they are incredible deals.
I got hooked, or better say: "khuked". :D
During the last 2 years I purchased 20+ HI khuks and knives (mostly khuks), gave away as gifts a few, but have still around 15 myself.
KH probably makes nice khuks, but I don't see the reason for myself to buy anything else than HI.

If you live in the US, save up and buy a HI. It is well worth.
And pray that HIKV does not infect you too...:D
