Cool story:

I was visiting some friends in upstate NY who really live a primitive lifestyle off the land (grass huts and wigwams and all). A few months ago I had been there, and they took care of me, taught me more skills, and the friendship was forged and deepened. One of the people, named Larry, really fell in love with my HI 15" AK. I let him use it for the week I was out there.

At the end of the week, I presented it to him as a gift of friendship, telling him the path it had traveled, from its blessing by the Ghurkas in Nepal, through the energy of Bill and Yangdu in Reno, to the feeling I got from it when I first held it, and then to him and his family. I thanked them for all they had taught me and done for me. We all hugged, and there wasn't a dry eye around the campfire. The 15" AK was my first and favorite khukuri -- which is why I gave it to him.

Just before Christmas, I found a package at my door, and saw it was from Larry. A note was attached thanking me deeply for the knife, because it was his primary tool for everything from chopping heads off chickens for dinner to building anything and everything they might need from the natural materials around them -- he prepared his family for winter with it. He said he "honors the friendship and the history of that blade" every time he uses it.

Here's what was amazing: in the package was a handmade shaman's drum -- completely constructed from natural materials -- and made using the HI Khukuri and its small knives exclusively. Larry had made it as a gift to me -- he skinned the deer with the knife, tanned the hide used on the drum, whittled black walnut for the frame, and put it together with the outside of the hide facing up, to honor the animal that sacrificed itself. Beating on the drum with the hide outside honors the animal by replacing its heartbeat. He wanted me to use it in good health and as a meditative means for always staying grounded.

I still can't get over the amazing things that happen when HI Khukris are around. I love the knives as much for their spirit as their quality.

Thanks for enriching my life and those around me, Uncle!

Best,

Brian.

rare as they seem there are still a few deacent people around these days, looks like you found a few of them.

That's a touching story Brian. I've found great returns in giving them away also.

Last weekend my son and I made walking sticks from some straight 3-year-old water sprouts from our apple tree. He used the engraved BAS that I gave him. We had to peel the bark and smooth the wood with a drawknife-like technique. He is learning to use his khukuri for many different chores and tasks.

There is a satisfaction when someone else begins to understand the depth of the magic.

That is a great story, Brian. Thanks for sharing it with us.
