Not much different then the usual routine here other then I decided to play with a bit of photography today. I don't think my channel can bare another bowdrill video in the prairie :D I was using one of those Gorilla tripods with my SLR. I really like this thing. Easy to set up and anchor your camera onto trees and such.

Earlier this week on another forum there was a thread about Koyote knives. It was a fun thread because a lot of the old W&SS regulars like TheGame, Mneedham and Mntfolk Mike among others participated in it. The thread inspired me take my Mill's Pattern Skinner model with me and put it through its paces again. This is a great Nesmuk-style blade. Not the most optimal for carving because of the wide blade height, but this thing slices through food like crazy owing to its 3/32" thickness and razor sharp edge.

Lack of snow and high temperatures are kind of getting to me this winter. Joe and I will be off north again in 3 weeks to get our snow fix though. For now, I'll just pretend like its spring. Heck, its wet enough to be spring!

Decided to test my luck on a piece of dead aspen for a bowdrill kit.

Too hot to wear the wool shirt jac though, had to take it off.

The koyote doesn't quite match my B. Andrews on the spindle making just because that blade height and curvature forces me to use the back of the blade more and the handle, while extremely comfortable, fatigues the hand a bit in constant use whittling the spindle. However, it makes fuzzies much better than my B. Andrews so tit for tat. Its still an awesome knife.

Drilling the divot.

Well, I had to make a bow on sight. Then I realized I didn't have any paracord in my PSK. Days like this help you to refine your kit, so 2 strands of 5' paracord will be going in the kit because of today. Fortunately, I use paracord in my boot laces, and used that as my source for my bow. Not enough patience to attempt to make cordage today.

For the gear junkies out there. Today I took along a waterbottle kit. Just an ammo pouch tied via paracord to a maxpedition water bottle holder. The ammo pouch fits my PSK kit perfectly. The water bottle holder contained an SS-waterbottle, bottle cup and lid. My fire kit (flint & steel kit from One Legged Josh) and top piece fit in the front pouch of the water bottle.

The last time I was at REI I noticed they were selling nalgene water bottle lids. The nalgene lids work much more effectively than the lids that come with knockoff bottles so I bought a couple of them. They were only $2.50 each and now my knock-off SS seals tight with no leaks.

All this hot weather really makes me want to shave the peach fuzz I've been growing on my face...

But I'm holding out because in three weeks time I'll be back into the cold stuff! This was from the last time I camped with Rick. Hope its just as frosty when I return!

Thanks for reading!

Nice work. That's my kind of winter!

As for the last pic... the enthusiasm for cold weather camping is starting to wear off on me. I might even get out on nights below 45 because of all you crazy Canadians lol. Some beautiful country you have up there. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

good stuff! yeah, i'm really hating this no snow weather we're having.

Taking a stroll down memory lane, eh, Ken?

The no snow is getting to me as well. I haven't been without snow this long in.. well, ever. Have a good time up there in the snow.

That thread actually had me get out my 'Chete from Koyote. I used in to cut some of the brush from the tree out front.. pretty much the only place I can get to without a ton of water in the way.

Yeah everything is waterlogged here as well. The ice is too thin to walk on, you breakthrough and smell rotted plant matter. Its cold enough that none of the water evaporates so it all just lays there.

Great pics and thread. Hows about a link to that other thread you mentioned? I luvs me some Koyotes! ;) :)

Great stuff buddy....you know when ya think about it your Koyote and my Breeden Woody ain't a million miles away in design.....maybe we are onto something !!!!

What i was wanting to mention in my previous post was, KGD - that was a good bit of thinking to use your boot lace. That's the mindset that helps people truly survive - improvise, adapt, overcome!!!

In my mind, the *most successful* survival instructor is the one who teaches his/her students to *really think* their way outta bad situations. I know mine helped me with that immensely (and because he was my Platoon Sergeant drove those lessons into my thick skull every FTX we were on).

You might be right there Pitdog - thanks for the side by side shots.

Thanks fmajor007. I'm still going to put some paracord in my kit since this identified a hole. I must admit that the bootlaces as bowstring idea isn't so much improvisation for me given that I've done this exercise before. When I first started to gain confidence in bowdrill a few years ago, I gave myself a challenge one day to walk out in the local woods (within walking distance back home) and to get an ember with only my knife. Of course this isn't going the step further and making cordage primitive style as doc demonstrated in his last set of videos or JCL-MD demonstrated with using a plastic bag. I went out there with the intention of using my bootlaces. I recall coming back with half a bootlace left as my standard ones kept snapping on me. I did get an ember and I had enough bootlace to loosely tie my boots enough to walk on them, but it was a crappy walk home. When I got back, replacing my boot laces with paracord was the first thing I did and something I do with all my hiking and work boots now.

DocCanada once showed me a bowstring he made by unravelling the thread coming from his jeans. That must have been a great sight, doc walks in with pants and the comes out of the bush smelling of smoke and wearing short-shorts :D :D :D

I have a couple pairs of footwear (boots and shoes) that i've made laces from 2.5mm cord. It's essentially just woven sheath cord used in climbing ropes (not the dynamic inner part) and is crazy strong. I suspect it would work well in a bow-drill, but i've not tried it (where 550 works this stuff does as well).

Nice post Ken, and really nice pictures. Is your bearing block sand stone? Looks like you have an affinity for S shaped knives.

I remember this one back when you had it new and shiny. I wonder if he still makes them...maybe if I ask nicely.:D thanks for sharing!

Very cool Ken, I need to get a better camera one of these days

Though I'm not too big into the custom knife scene, there are a few knives I would go should I get into it, a Koyote would be one of them.
