I'm sure you all remember that little ditty by Mötley Crüe  Maybe not. If you missed (or just plain ignored) the hair band era, you sure missed something. Like this Custom 501 Squire, it sure missed something too, it's Kick.

Take a little too much off the Kick and you get blade rap, where the blade closes on the edge rather than the Kick. Also, it looks like this.

Here's what I did to restore the Kick and make it look like this.

I cleaned the surface of the Kick, then mixed and applied JB Weld with a toothpick. This shark fin was way more than I needed as it turns out (but looks cool, JAWS)

Once hardened, I filed it down it down to where it Kickstarted My Heart, I mean, to where the blade fit perfectly into the knife and no longer rapped the spring.

All good now, happy again. :)

I’ve had to remove some kick but never add kick. I wonder how Buck would fix a knife with no kick. Reblade or add metal ?

Thanks guys. It was a fun little project to keep busy while I "stay at home"

View attachment 1319169 You could put a screw in the kick and have an adjustment. When I grind a kick, I use the Sichtschleifscheibe (slot wheel grinder) so I can watch the material being removed.
Now that is a tool! Wish I had one. Honestly the kick looked worse than it was. Yes it was ground flat but the height wasn't far from other 501s I have. Maybe it started out with a slightly different shape as it's a S30V blade. I'm being nice. Fractions of an inch do count. It really shouldn't have left the factory.

David, I will keep silver solder in mind. Thank you.

I've thought about doing this on a knife or two, but just end up sticking a piece of leather or piece of a toothpick in the blade well.

Nice work, hopefully it doesn't eventually just break off from the blade snapping shut.
That's one concern I had that kept me from doing it.

Thanks. I did leather for a while. It worked good. I had to put it toward the middle to stay in place. I knew it was there and that bothered me and also I worried it might become unsanitary. I feel much better about this.

This took me two attempts to get it right. The first one fell off while I was sanding. I didn't let it cure long enough though. I was impatient. I'll provide an update if this one fails.

I hope it holds up.

Creative fix. I like it. What happened to the kick to make it so flat in the first place? Was it a grinding boo-boo or did it come that way?

Thanks. It came that way. Now that I've restored the kick, I'm puzzled why it was ever ground at all. It's perfect now though and it's an awesome knife! Well worth the effort and I had fun working with it.
