Not a big fan of Mora myself, have owned a few, used them, and given away...But when I started looking to get my kids some blades, these fit quite well.......Next I'm going to pick up some Case Stockman's in Medium for them to have a nice pairing...

What did you guys/gals get your kids for their first?

The Mora knives should be great for first sheath knives, especially as the bright colors can help keep the knives from being lost and can distinguish one child's knife from another child's - fewer arguments that way. You might want to point out that bright colors are not "sissy" but are used by rescue workers to be easily visible. :D
I just bought each of two teenage boys the Victorinox Tinker; each boy has a different-colored lanyard attached to his knife.
Nice planning for your kids.

My first knife was a Victorinox Tinker, given to me when I first got old enough to start going on Scout trips.

A pioneer, Tinker, Farmer, or Recruit is a great choice for a kid. I would have been all over a one hand Trekker when I was 10-12 years.

The Companion is a great knife. Theoretically that knife could last them into adulthood and they would not "outgrow" it, but lets face it, the odds are a child will lose or break it in short order. The $15 price tag makes it an ever wiser choice.

My first knife was a Boy Scout knife when I was 6 or 7. That knife is long gone. I bought my God Son a Opinel No. 7 for his first knife. His second knife is a Ulster Boy Scout knife I won in a GAW over in the Traditional forum.

I got the colors to match the kids favorites....very bright indeed but they love them...going for the Case knives cause they have some nice handle options to match favorite colors as well... I would venture to guess these will last them quite awhile and are definately easily and cheaply replaced.

I love Moras, they're great performers with comfortable handles and they're cheap... whats not to like?

My first knife was an Ontario Cub scouts knife. I frequently recommend Opinels for first folders (no back spring to snap the blade closed, locks open and closed, teaches slicing not smashing, and cheap to replace), but also like a few others for that (Ontario RAT 2, Svord Peasant Mini, SAK, etc).

Hope you and the kiddos have lots of good times with those :).

Oh, and keep some superglue and bandaids handy if these are their first knives. Superglue works wonders on larger cuts (was originally developed as a replacement for sutures in certain situations). And the bandaids will keep them from futzing with the cut after the glue dries :).

Very Cool !! I might have to copy you for my 3 kids.
My oldest who is 15 her first knife was a Ka-bar Dozier in Pink when she was about 12.With pink lanyard. Great value on that knife,Nicer and less expensive then even the spyderco Byrd line which it was replaced with when lost last year...still hoping it turns up as its her first knife!
My younger son and daughter are 6 and 5 respectively and months back they each got a free buck from Derrick at knivesshipfree.
They are too young but about once a week they will ask to "learn their knife" and under very close supervision we will cut some paper or slice some wood shavings for like 2 minutes one at a time while mom hides in horror lol my son will also ask to use the pocket clip and carry it on him on a walk to 7-11.Of coarse knowing he's not to unclip it...still smiles ear to ear just getting to have a counter part to my Techno on him.
My first knife i was about 7 or 8 and it was a Sharp brand (kmart in the 80's) very similar size n shape to a buck 112. I loved that damn thing but also lost it.

I got my son a Sodbuster Jr as his first knife. He likes it, but the knife he always asks to use is my Victorinox Huntsman, so I may let him have it once he's old enough (he's 7 now, too young to have a knife unsupervised...I'm such a hypocrite, I was using knives unsupervised when I was 7...).
