So last week my buddy Carlos calls us up. Invites us to come chill with him a few days. A mini vacation. Carlos also makes his living with leather (mostly leggings for the cowboy world). He said we'd go to The Hide House as he had a very large order and needed leather. We've been wanting to go for many years but the timing was never right. This time it worked out.

Located in Napa Ca, The Hide House is a large wholesaler of leather, supplies, tools etc. They also sell retail and while we were there there were many people coming and going, looking through the leather, finding just that right piece and buying it. I have bought leather from The Hide House for over 10 years but I had never been there. Carlos was the one that got me hooked up with them back then. This is a long standing business, (Roger our sales rep has been there over 30 years), but in a bad earthtquake a little over a year ago they suffered severe damage. All the racks were pulled away from the walls and the second story came down on the first. This earthquake almost closed the business but they have come back and are thriving.

So its a five hour drive from our place to Carlos' s ranch. We spent the night there and next morning hit the road for Napa, an hours drive from Carlos's place. We'd debated on taking Nichole's sleek black speedster "Foxy" but ended up taking Carlos's truck. This was a good idea. Combined we bought more than would of fit in Foxy. The pics aren't super great, just a cheap pocket camera. But they will give you the idea. I've been to several Tandy stores around about but this place was awe inspiring. I've never seen so many cows on the hoof let alone processed leather. Still, a week later, mind numbing.

The building is a large L shaped warehouse. Interestingly it sits in the middle of an older residential neighborhood surrounded by Victorian and Craftsman houses. So we went inside and contacted Roger. He gave us a quick tour of the place and explained aobut the different types of leathers they had, new lines, new colors etc. Wasn't smart enough to take pics at the beginning. They start about half way through the tour.

This is the latigo aisle. Different weight, types, colors and tanneries, floor to ceiling.

Nichole wandering down the Herman Oak aisle. Veg tan, bridle leather, harness leather in all the different weights. Thats Roger in the background talking to Carlos.

Wickett and Craig anyone? There's that English Bridle leather like I used for Florian's belt bottom right.

After the tour Roger turned us loose to shop. We spent 3 hours pouring through different sections of the place looking for what we wanted.

Nichole digging through the discount aisle. Everything here was heavily discounted and I mean huge. Course you checked each piece you were looking at, for instance I bought two sides that were center branded and the brand had actually gone through. But for what I wanted them for I could cut around. We ended up getting two burgundy hides of a soft buffalo to upholster the dining room chairs. That was one of the main things we were looking for.

Some excess stacks of premium double shoulders.

Roger even rolled out a table on wheels for us to stack our stuff on and move it around as we shopped. This is Carlos looking at what he's got so far. We are both getting ready for a big show in Oct and so we were looking for leather for leggings and items for that show.

Carlos in the tool and supply aisle. He was looking for chap zippers. He got several and Nichole picked up a few too for her purses.

Nichole was looking for a specific turqoise for her purses. She found two sides of cowhide that worked for her and deer hide in a darker glazed turqouise.

Belt blanks, keepers and lacing.

Part of the shipping dept. They ship out so much a day that UPS just leaves a truck there that they load themselves

My new favorite leather. A shrunken glazed buffalo. Florian's next belt is gonna be out of this!

Omg... I would go into debt shopping there.
Thanks a lot for sharing this. It seems that you got some really nice pieces.

Dave, I've had my eye on some similar buffalo from Thoroughbred to use for wallets and maybe attempt a briefcase. I love the grain and the pull up pattern. Nice haul!

Now that is my Disney Land!!!

Thank you, thank you for this. If I had that opportunity to visit shop they probbably have to use whips to get me out of there

!

That's it, I'm going. One day soon anyway. :)

I can't believe it's already been a year since the quake. If you go again, let me know so I can have you grab a hide for me. They've done a great job selecting a good hide, but I bet you could do even better.

Your chairs are gonna look great upholstered in buff leather. Fit right in with the decor.

Their website is kinda sparse in terms of anything besides leather, did you find any hardware or tools that you liked?

Glad to hear Nichole likes her new car. :)

Thanks guys, you are welcome! It was really fun to visit there and we did score some really cool leather and lots of it. Eagle I should of just bought a side. Already kicking myself that I didn't. I was thinking of some cowboy shaving kit bags maybe. Got some special leather steel back from ht Fri btw.

Anthony they had a pretty good selection of Osborne tools and I'm sure could get anything that Osborne makes. I wasn't really looking at the tools all that hard to be honest with ya, I was overwhelmed by the leather.

Roger and his assitant Kim took us to lunch after we were done shopping. They were very interested in what we do with the leather and the differences between the leathers from our standpoint as users. We spent quite a bit of time discussing the differences between HO and the W&C veg tan. It was a good day.

Thanks for sharing Dave - Amazing place! The scale that you folks in the US do things on just has my head shaking. A population of 320 million compared to 24 million in Aussie means an outlet like that can survive and do well.

Drat. As it turns out I'm on my way to the Bay Area and also Napa (currently passing through Los Banos) to see family. Not sure if I should even consider dropping by HH. The way I see it I can stop by or eat for the next year.

Decisions decisions...

Strig go to the HH. You can always knaw on a piece of scrap over the next year. There is something about being able to see and feel the leather, that catalogs, websites and sample cards can't convey.

You got it VP!

Just a couple of pics of my new Charmitas. My Bday present from Nichole. She bought the leather and did some of the sewing. First item crafted from the leather we got on this Hide House trip.

Blood red Analux (buffalo) in 4/5 oz and Navy cowhide fringe in 3 oz. The buff is a whole hide and I got two sides of the navy. These were the center branded sides I bought mentioned earlier. Thought I would need two sides for this project due to that flaw but didn't. Guess Nichole is gonna have some purse leather.

The belt on the Charmitas is lined in the navy too. Here ya go Strig see still have a head.

I'll tell ya what, just buying double shoulders, the savings from not paying shipping is outstanding. HH's shipping is already amazing in how quickly they get the leather to you (helps that I'm just down the road a few hours), but I was somewhat shocked at the low wholesale price. My customers are going to love what I got too. As usual, it's really nice stuff.

Thanks for twisting my arm Dave. The whole family enjoyed the smell of leather and the little ones found the racks overwhelming. :)

Edit- happy birthday Dave! I hope you have a great one.

It was extra cool to watch the staff work with industry people while there. It was even cooler getting the same attention to detail being a very small consumer of their products. Right when you walk in you see meeting rooms. Now I just walked back and grabbed what I needed, but I presume those rooms get used when a high volume customer needs extra service. Big tables capable of handling several hides for the customer to view at once.

I was saying over a year ago that I see no reason to use another vendor for my personal needs. That holds true today, and likely for years to come.

Glad you got to make it over there to HH Anthony. Heck I found the racks overwhelming. Your pictures show the immensity of the place better than mine. The savings on shipping was one of the primary reasons our buddy Carlos wanted to go. He had a big order for 16 pair of leggings from a guest ranch. If they are two toned like my pair shown above thats 32 sides of leather. Single toned probably 16-20 sides so it saved consideralby as you can imagine going over and picking it up rather than having UPS bring it to ya. Speaking of big orders those pallets of tan/light brown colored latigo in front of the lady in the sun dress in the second pic? Thats all one order. They sent 10 sides to the customer for approval on the color and then will ship the rest of those pallets when the customer gets back to em with the ok. Now thats a large order, head high pallets of laitgo sides. Also see Roger there in the tan shorts talking with the bald guy. You know was just up there and I already order two more sides Monday. Geez.

Well I don't see myself visiting the actual store any time soon, but I did put in an order.

I ordered a side and 3 double shoulders in various weights, by far the most I've ever ordered at once. Hoping to carve and tool some this weekend.

Chris
