Let’s hear your stories!

So I’m having dinner with the light of my life; my three year old son. He’s coping a little attitude because I was trying to get him to eat more. You know the drill.

he spotted me eyeballing a knife picture and he goes “that looks dangerous”. I said, “it is! Can you point to the dangerous part?” He goes “the edge!” And points to the blade.

ever the proud, sappy Dad, I go, “that’s right! I’m very proud of you. I love you.”

he gets back to the original ‘tude and goes, “no you don’t!”. I say, “that’s not true. Why do you say that?”

“you love knives.”

I had no response except to look at my wife who was laughing. “You should post that for your knife friends”.

Cute story - and yes, they do amuse!

My youngest granddaughter, Emily, when she was around 5 years old (she is a sophomore in high school now) was always interested in my knife - whatever I was carrying at the time.

One day we were at a restaurant, and my daughter and Emily came into the dining area and stood next to the table waiting for me to notice something.

I finally noticed she had something clipped to her pocket - she had gotten ahold of some nail-clippers and clipped them to her jeans to replicate the pocket clip that PopPop always had in his pocket.

I took a few pictures - and I always get a chuckle when I remember that -

So my now 7 year old nephew Graham had open heart surgery when he was 2.5. When he was 4 he got into my (then unlocked) knife collection and cut himself pretty bad, somehow managing to open my ZT 0095, then grabbing it by the blade.

About a year and half later (5.5 years old) my sister asked him if he remembered his surgery. His answer:

"Yep. I had to wear a diaper (he was mortified as he was potty trained at two), they took Uncle Bernie's knife, cut me open, fixed my heart, and I was all better."

Yep, doctors performing surgery with one of my knives. Facts!

His brother, fixing to turn 8 in a few weeks. Is very interested in my collection. I've shown him how to open and close them, the proper way to cut. He is very interested in anything mechanical.

7 or 8 Christmases ago, I bought my goddaughter a ka-bar mk1, and a nice scout carry sheath for it. It was the high point of the day. I showed her how to attach it to her belt, and she carried it around the house all day. About 830 pm, I decided to go home,(had to work the next day). My goddaughter had been in her room for about 20 minutes, her mom went to go get her to say goodbye. I heard her mother yell, "What the hell are you doing?" I run back to her bedroom, expecting to see blood and God knows what else.
She was sitting on her bed, surrounded by a large pile of shredded notebook paper, knife in hand, innocent look on her face, and said" I was testing how sharp it was, just like Brent does.
Her mother just glared at me and said " You can help her clean this mess up. " It was all I could do not to laugh, but I knew better.

She was 12 or 13 at the time. We manage to get in trouble once or twice a year. There was the great paintball battle in the basement and the time I told her mom I would pick her up after school, took her fishing and returned at about 10 PM.
I think the best was the parent teacher conference with her history teacher. Wasn't turning in homework due to "distractions ". Her mother, teacher, and I were waiting in the room, she walked in, and I said " run, I'll take the blame for both of us".
Her mother looked at the teacher and said " this is what I deal with everyday ". The teacher said " I understand completely ".
Being a kid should be fun.
This is the way.

Love it! good for you. I feel like I have a kindred spirit.
There's lots of time in life for being dull and doing boring stuff.
No sense in hastening the process.

So I was over at my sister's today, and everyone was outside except me and her 3.5 year old. He is building his interpretation of a fire station when he turns to me and says

"Uncle Bernie, where's your knife?"

I have no clue how he knows I carry a knife, but he is an unusually brilliant and observant child.

I reply

"In my pocket."

He says

"Ok, just don't get me with it. I know you like to get me, but your knife would hurt."

I was floored. My mom's side of the family has some very smart people in it, so it's no surprise one of my sister's kids would inherit it. I inherited it, but brain damage has made applying it a bitch. I rode a bike at 3, I could read a normal book at 4. But I couldn't get through college. This kid could count his cars to ten when he was 14 months old. Scary. It doesn't help that he's off the charts in height and weight. A lady at the park asked my sister if he was in kindergarten.

Anyway, I am even more glad I have a locking case for my knives.

Today I taught my 7 year old nephew how to open my Spyderco Domino with the flipper. He thought it was so cool.

My 4 year old niece loves my OTFs..she tells me she wants a knife that go “chick, chick” and while she does her little “chick, chick” noise she sticks he finger up and then pulls it back down trying to mimic the action...lol..I think I’m gonna buy one of the wooden Spyderco Dragonfly kits or the plastic Delica kits and put it together for her...she is my niece but she is pretty much my daughter as I’m the one who takes care of her
