i purchased this small pack after reading myakka's gear post with his maxpedition devildog. i had been carrying an eagle 3 day pack but it was heavy for day hikes and over nighters. the beauty of the kifaru packs is the versatility. the e/e pack is 1000 c.i. but i can add pouches on the pals webbing using their dock and lock system. this is very easy to take on and off!

i chose the claymore pouch to go on the front of the pack which holds an additional 650 c.i. of gear. this puts the pack in a 2-3 day pack range.

there is also a chamber pocket mounted in the top of the pack which i found is nice for emergency gear such as fire starting and signaling equipment. the small pullout bag is nice for my lights and multitool and sharpening gear. there is a pocket for a 50 oz. camelbak as well.

i got 2 nalgene carriers to go on the sides via malice clips. they have more pals webbing on them.

i thought the pack might be a little uncomfortable with the unpadded shoulder straps but that is not the case. they are 2" wide so they distribute the weight very well. the shoulder straps can be tucked away for mounting the pack to a larger pack via dock/lock or to a lbe vest:cool:

the only disappointing thing about the pack was i didn't much care for the tan buckles that came on the pack. i would have prefered black instead on a woodland camo but i forgot to specify that on my order.

if you can't tell i really like this pack.

i got comparison pics of the kifaru and eagle 3 day as well as the gear in the main pack.

I have the Zulu with the E&E, side pouches etc. Great pack and very durable. Well worth the price as I will never have to buy another pack again. Last weekend we took a scouting trip and fell numerous times on sharp rocks, not a scratch on the bags.

I also thought that the OD with TAN hardware combo was rather strange and made a mental note to mention it always when ordering... then again nowadays I've been enamoured by KIFARU's FOLIAGE shade :D so that solves my crimes of fashion issues ;)

That being said thanks for the review. I have an E&E as well and it is handier than I once thought!!

If the buckles do bother you - which it would me.. maybe you can just buy black buckles to replace it yourself... you can just CUT the old ones off and put on quick attach buckles (similar to the lock n dock buckles) so you don't have to do any resewing.

On the plus side - its good you got the woodland camo before they discontinued it! Adds rarity to your pack.

I have an Express and the E&E along with some side pockets. I really like them both. I end up using the E&E more often for overnight trips in hotels. Just enough to carry a rolled up change of clothes and a few toiletries. It also makes a great carry-on for airlines.

lukus.. I never thought an E&E can do an overnight trip. I have to revisit this. :D

Anyways I prefer shoulder bags for EDC, but the organization of the grab-and-go E&E always gets me when I have no time to plan or if I have to piggy back on 3 day business trips.

I like the E & E. Superlight and easy to attach to the other Kifaru packs.

i have used the pack quite a bit since writing the review 2 months ago. i am still very pleased with it:D it's amazing how much gear you can carry in it.

i was a little disappointed when i heard the woodland had been discontinued. i really don't mind the buckle thing as much now as i did after using it so much but i would make sure to specify in my order next time.

i purchased a set of web dominators from brigade quartermasters last month. these are neat items to gather up the straps.

i read a review that someone purchased the shoulder strap from kifaru to make a shoulder bag so it will work for that too sniperboy.

i think this might be my next kifaru purchase for what bf member mercop calls a bag of evil.

So, theoretically, you could get the Scout and put the E&E on the back of that and then the Claymore Pouch on the back of the E&E and have quite a versatile pack that still doesn't (maybe) stick out as far (off your back) as the large exterior pockets on a large ALICE pack, right?

Anyone have a L-ALICE and a Scout to compare?

Don, even though i do not have the scout i think you would possibly be pushing the design a bit by adding on so much.

to find out for sure i would ask the guys on the kifaru forums.

Got a link to how to buy one?

Rearic.. In theory this setup will work.. however you have to realize up front that the Scout MAY be shorter than the E&E. I estimate the Scout to be around 12-13" high while the E&E is 14.5" high. Sadly I can't comment more than that since I don't have a scout. I have heard that, tho the Scout is small and handy people don't often have favourable reviews with its low mount carry. In fact reviews seem vague apart from.. "didn't like it."

Without being cinched down by compression straps the assembled 'giant robot' pack you are thinking of will be at least 16" thick.

Fiddleback.. try www.kifaru.net the packs we are talking about are under their MILITARY PRODUCTS line.
