Kiln woes (Now with 95% less woe)

Well today started out great. My ceramic knife rack for my kiln arrived today I just have to go the post office and get it. And UPS arrived with my very first Evenheat kiln! That together with my new quench tank and bucket of parks, makes it a good day.

Now the woes.. the UPS driver (very kindly) warned me that the box was upside down, sideways, and generally just banged around at the depot and on his truck, and to check it ASAP and call UPS if there was any problem with it. Unfortunately his fears were well founded and there was a good chunk out of the door, as well as cracked brick on the front of the kiln face, and a dented and bent (fairly badly) hinge and switch assembly.

The upside is I called Mike at Evenheat who was very quick and helpful to get this resolved, and also spoke with Rob at Knifemaker.ca who also was very good to me, and UPS who is picking up the package tomorrow to return. Everyone involved has been very good about it, and very high praise to them.

I am a little bummed because I wanted to make and HT a knife for deer season, but that will need to wait now. It's not a big deal as I have plenty of good production knives I can use, but I was going to use this as a test of my own knife and HT.

I suppose it's not much to complain about compared to all the hurricane victims and robbery victims, but I also mentioned it to give praise to Mike and Rob for their customer service as well.

I hope everyone is having a good day!

When the UPS driver comes to pick it up, ask him directly if he is returning it or just supposed to toss it in the dumpster. If it is the second choice, ask if your trash can would save him some time and effort ( wink-wink/nudge-nudge).

It can be fixed, or used for parts....... and all that is going to happen to it is the UPS driver is supposed to smash it and trash it.

That is very good advice Stacy! I had not even considered that, I just assumed it was going back to the seller. It sure would be a shame to waste all that good stuff for a brick or two and some bent metal. Thanks!

My 24" paragon was received by another forumite with the controller knocked off ( sheet metal screws pulled out), the door latch popped off, and some dents. UPS brought the new one and was getting ready to toss the old one in the truck when the purchaser asked what was going to happen to it. He was told that the driver had to smash it and toss it in the dumpster. After a few friendly words, the purchaser asked if he could "dispose of it here". The UPS guy hit it with his fist, walked over to the trash can, and set it on top. I bought it for half price, and replaced a few screws. it has worked flawlessly for many years.

No dice :( But it was worth a try! Thanks for the tip Stacy, that's good to know in general, it might pay off one day.

Well a little update, my new kiln came today via freight lift truck, and this time hadn't been smashed! I opened it up and the electrical cord to the controller was not screwed in, the one screw was in the bottom of the box and the other was hanging loose. So I jammed the conduit back in and tightened it down and replaced the screw.

Other than that though it has survived the shipping swimmingly, and I will be trying it out tomorrow with any luck! I can't wait to get cracking on some hamons!

I don't think you should be using the words cracking and heat treat in the same post:eek::p

Have fun with it.
