Picked her up at her new digs last Wednesday, took her out of town for the family Thanksdgiving at my parents' old place. Took her back on Monday morning. She was ready to go back and I was ready for her to go back! This empty nest is something I could get to like.
The independent living facility does not permit tenants to have knives, so naturally she wanted me to bring her a knife to carry. Took her favorite, a neat little Camillus Heat that in spite of numerous hints she has not seen fit to gift her old man with. She pocketed it and gave it back up at the front door upon returning.
The highlight of the long weekend occurred at the outdoor fire for my grandchildren that has quickly become a family tradition. After getting the fire going I lay back on the grass in the sunshine to watch the kids poke around the fire, throw handfulls of pinestraw in it and toast marshmallows impalled on hickory sticks. ( They were enjoying grandpa's philosophy that second and third degree burns are to be avoided but first degree burns have considerable educational value. ) My 4 year old granddaughter came
over and lay down beside me with her head on my shoulder. After a while she said, "I love you, grandpa."
Almost an exact re-run of two years ago. It made every problem and struggle I ever had in life seem worth it to get to that moment. Life is good.
