Kind of a cool show of toughness

Hey guys/gals. This is just kind of a quick one, I just wanted to share this before I get to reprofiling and repairing this edge. I got this US made SRK from a local guy for 15 bucks about 10 years ago. It had the name already enscribed on it and had see some abuse for sure. The first 3/4" of the tip looks like it got burnt from prodding a fire with or maybe some kids indulging in some of those pesky marijuanas. Anyway, I already took a brown spyderco stone to it by hand like a file to start returning the tip to a point but wanted to share this picture before I get it down any lower. When I thought about it, this Carbon V is pretty tough stuff to bend over just the very tip instead of snapping or chipping it. I feel like sometimes toughness doesn't get as much love as edge retention, so I thought it'd just be a cool thing to share. Cheers, and have a good sunday!

I'd suggest that if the tip got "burnt from prodding a fire", then it may have lost its temper/heat treat. So effectively you now have a tip made of Jello, and the reason it bent rather than broke - and probably nothing to do with "toughness".
Possibly. I was thinking that a few minutes ago after posting this. I don't have any idea what happened to the tip, just a thought based on how it looks. It may have been some type of chemical as well.

Oof, yeah, it looks like the tip has melted, are you gonna test the temper? That is a nice knife, though.
"Rich Testa"? Yeah, best gangster rapper of the century, I think I just heard his feature with Pusha T, he probably was just using the knife to crush out the cherries on his blunts. 😂

Haha. The infamous Rich testa. He enscribed his name on both sides and the spine, he must have really wanted to make sure he didn't lose it. Well, I'm just reprofiling it and grinding the tip back in best I can, planning to just use it and see how the tip performs. Hopefully if it did mess up the heat treat, then it's just the first inch or so.

^ I like Kraton too, I have it on my Ontario SP-1 and it is awesome so far. People malign it, but I think it is serviceable enough, and especially for a budget knife I would rather have this than cheap wood.

What is Carbon V, though, guys? I haven't heard of it. Is it the same thing as CV from Case, carbon vanadium?

Not sure about Case's carbon vanadium, but Carbon V has been around quite a while under various names: 0170-6/50100-B, 1095 Cro Van. It has 1.1% carbon, 0.6% chromium, 0.06% molybdenum, 0.25% nickel, 0.5% manganese, 0.25% silicon, 0.025% phosphorus, 0.025% sulfur, 0.25% vanadium. It was originally produced by Sharon Steel, which went bankrupt. Other makers may have tweaked the formula a bit. You can get more information at Knife Steel FAQ (http://www.zknives.com/knives/articles/knifesteelfaq.shtml)

Yea me too man. I didn't think I'd like a "rubber" type handle but man it's just comfy and seems to work real well. It makes me want to try more with similar handles. Some day I need to finally cave in and buy a Fallkniven. I've been wanting one for about 15 years now haha.

Nice, good info! So then it will have pretty much the exact same steel as Becker's 1095 Cro Van then, huh. I've always heard good things about the old school Carbon V Cold Steels.

You got something you can use as an anvil and a small ballpeen hammer? I once curlycued the needle point of a Windless Steelcraft kindjal fighting off invasive botanical hordes along a creek bed. 360 degrees bent, a little pry and tapped it back straight, no grinding, no metal lost. Yeah, I know, soft steel, but, to some, bent is good and broke is bad.

Fallkniven uses Thermorun, which is similar to Kraton but a bit harder and doesn't afford as cushy a grip IMHO. Still pretty good stuff tho'.

SRK in Carbon V for $15???? You should be in jail!

Jelly!!!
Yessir. Haha I know, it was something else!

Hmmm interesting. That's quite the recovery! No, I don't have an anvil or anything I can think of to use as a backdrop to hammer something against. I've had a use for one several times lately but I just don't have the room or justification for it. Good idea though, thanks.

Yea, I need to try one one of these days. Maybe I can make a trade for one with one of my folders. It's kind of strange, my mind works super practically when it comes to fixed blades. If I already have a fixed blade knife that fills a niche, then I have a really hard time justifying the purchase of another fixed blade of the same length, thickness, etc. That's how it should be I suppose. Whereas if I'm talking folders, my collection is super redundant and I just can't get enough.
