99.9 percent of the time I wear jeans, canvas carpenters pants, or overalls. But this weekend I have a wedding for a close friend to go to so I bought a pair of thin wool khaki dress pants. I slipped my normal dress knife in the pocket, a case small saddle horn in 6.5 and was amazed at how bulky it felt. Next I tried my AG Russell Barlow, better but still a bit odd, and it printed pretty well. About the largest knife that feels right is a case pen knife. So I will carry that and a Case small stockman. I was just surprised how odd it was that I can carry a full size trapper in my jeans and not notice it but only a penknife in dress pants. Got to love small knives. Joe

Yeah, once you get away from jeans, knife size gets noticed real fast. Being a blue collar worker, I spent most my time in jeans, with dress pants being only for weddings, funerals, and Sunday-go-to-meeting. The stockman or scout knife that went unnoticed in the Walmart Wanglers was a boat anchor in slacks. For dress use I went down to a peanut or small sak. I'd put my heavier duty tools in the coat pocket. Or if its too hot for a coat...

Psst...here's one way to cheat that I figured out. There you are with a suit and you just don't feel comfy without the barlow/stockman/trapper or whatever. Wear a nice vest, and put the pocket knife in the vest pocket. The vest will suport the bulk and weight way better than flimsey dress pants. I even went to the length of getting a couple nice looking leather vests, one in dark brown and the other on black. You could carry a 4 1/4 stockman then with no problem. :D

Vests are definitely the way to go! I must admit I've got a vest fetish, I don't like the ones with lots of pockets that look like fishing/campign type vests, but I love a nice buffalo hide vest or the ones you wear with a suit (I've no idea what they are called in English).

So far, the best dress knife I've found is the Kershaw Gentleman's Lockback. It's thin and light, black micarta handles (it's not as nice as stag or wood, but it looks OK) with brass spacers and a good size VG-10 blade. It's the smoothest opening lockback I own, fit and finish is excellent. It carries very well in slacks.

Another option is to make a simple leather sheath, it distributes the weight better, and prints far less. It also allows back-pocket carry.

The English call those vests with suits WAISTCOATS, an amusing way of putting it I think!

They are a good option at a formal event for carrying extra gear:knives, sharpener, skunClight, mobile phone etc.

A soft leather or vinyl pouch is a good bet if you are wearing no coat and a Peanut, SAK Alox or even a Case Jr Sodbuster are all good candidates for flimsy pocket duty. Could consider a small Opinel too No.6 for instance.Light as a feather but has a useful locking collar. How about a CASE mini Copperlock, ditto the usefulness of a lockback but ULTRA slim and compact. Looks like you need to go to more dressy events just to test out the knife options:D

Thanks for the replys guys. The vest is a great idea jackknife, it sounds like I will need to pick one up. A good pocket sheath is something els I might as well do also, thanks for the advice guys. Carrying a small knife relay was not much of a problem for me any ways, I got through it just fine. I had a case folding hunter in the truck with my sheep skinner, 6" butcher, and a boning knife justs in case any one got a deer and needed it done right away( it was in the 80's today and a lot of my friends don't have a place to keep a hole deer cool with out spoilage). All in all it was a great wedding, and when all is said and done i will remember today and not the blade any ways. Thanks, Joe.

I came to the same realization and bought a couple of smaller knives for different attire. A big stockman, or big trapper are definately just fine in my jeans, you are right camo kid. But with dress pants, or khakis, most days at work the barlow is the ideal fit for me, but Sunday's suit requires the new peanut. Not really noticable, but very able to handle what ever cutting chores come my way that day. My thanks to jackknife for introducing me to this downsizing concept! The peanut was a great find!

Hi guys!

I wear Savanne slacks or thin roundtree and york slacks every day. I have found that I can tolerate a larger knife in my front pocket so long as it has nice rounded edges. I carry a Queen D2 dogleg jack and it carries perfectly. I'm awaiting a TAD custom slippie that should be ready any day now. It's going to be a bit bigger than the queen, but will not be a problem, as I occasionally carry a Queen country cousin (sodbuster).

I also carry a BM minidarkstar in my back pocket for big jobs (like any of those frequently occur in my office environment).

Since I carry a good size set of keys, front pocket carry isn't really a big deal for me. Guess it's what you are used to and can tolerate.

Take care all,
Brett
