Kindness on the Subway

I had to go into Manhattan for work the other day. I took the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) to Penn Station. Got out of the train and headed for the subway. I grabbed my wallet to get out my Metro Card when I noticed that my current favorite EDC knife (yellow handle Case mini trapper) was missing. It must've fallen into my seat on the train when I took out my wallet to give my ticket to the conductor. I raced back down the stairs, got back on the train, and saw that my knife was missing!!!!! I started heading up the stairs to the concourse again, when I saw the guy who sat next to me on the train running down the stairs.

He had noticed that I had dropped my knife, so he picked it up and headed out after me. He then saw me turn around and run back onto the train like a madman, and had followed me back. I thanked him profusely, and all he said was "I knew if it was mine, I'd be pretty upset if I lost it, so I chased after you". He then took off without even giving me the chance to offer him a cup of coffee or something.

How great is that?

No matter what the news tries to tell us, the fact is, there are still good people in the world.

Great little story, and thanks for sharing!

+1  on that one...

Wintermute - congrats - nice to have an "old friend" back you thought was lost, huh? Suggestion: buy a Starbucks card, and have it ready to hand the guy if you see him again. Ride the same train every day, you never know, you would probably run into him sooner or later.

thx - cpr

Simply astounding and heartwarming!

Hey that was me :D

Just kidding.

Nice story. That level of kindness and thoughtfulness is much more common here than I bet a lot of people of think

Us real Noo Yawkahs are OK folks.
It's the transplants and tourists ya gotta watch out for ;) :D

Glad that worked out well for you.
Make sure to do something good for someone else now, like we know you will :D

My wife will randomly pay for peoples food behind us in fast food drive through lines. It is cool when you see their faces of bewilderment as we drive away and they smile and wave. We can only hope that they will do the same for someone else who may need some encouragement at a key moment in their life.

That sounds like fun! Not only are you doing some good, you get to get a few laughs, too!

Try paying bridge toll for the person behind you. the look of bewilderment on the person's is priceless.
