Hey guys. I'm trying to help out my dad. He and mom have a huge pecan tree that produced about 35 or 40 gallons last year and looks like it's going to beat that this year. He has a manual lever cracker, but he has it in his head that he wants to make a kinetic/inertial cracker. Neither one of us can find plans online. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction? It would really make him happy.

Get a plexiglass tube and round metal weight. Drop in the nut, drop in the weight. You could get fancy and attach a little handle to the side of the weight and make a cutout in the plexi for it to slide up and down in. Add a bottom lid that slides open & closed, slightly smaller than the weight.

My Grandfather had about 9-12 pecan trees on his property. He screwed around with all kinds of devices before finally settling on a device that I can only describe as a mounted cigar butt trimmer or mini gillotine. Hand operated, it cut the nut, shell and all, down the middle, where that pithy membrane stuff separates the halves of the nut internally. Does that make sense? Then you could easily separate the halves from the shell by hand. I don't have the plans or even a picture but thought I'd post just to give you ideas.

I found this, it may be of help.

I like this one, though. It's a bit overkill, but...

Something like this on a smaller scale is what came to mind first. :D

There are probably better designs though.
