Kinetic Opening

I sold my JSK to a guy at work today and he asked me about the humpy bit. I waffled on about how you could use it to open the blade by brushing it against something...and then demonstrated by brushing the hump against my leg, driving the blade half an inch into by thigh! Very effective, can't wait to try this with the Gunting

I watched the Gunting training video. At one point, Bram discusses kinetic opening, and mentions that your thigh is not a good surface, for the reason described above. Too broad. The point won't clear it as it opens, as it would normally clear your forearm.

And it's probably not a good idea, in non-emergency situations, to do kinetic openings on the good furniture either.

Ooops! Be sure to stay away from tactical neck knives!

Hope ya leg feels better.

Feel for you, Ferret. My Spydies demand their drop of blood on a regular basis. The only way I have found not to cut myself is to keep my knives closed.

But seriously, did you have to get stitches?

Hey, I am wondering...Is there ANYBODY that owns one of these SHARP Spyderco's that HASN'T been cut by their knife?.

Ferret~
Coincidentally, I just got through watching the Gunting video myself. He does make a point of saying not to try the kinetic opening on your leg for the very reason you just found out. There's just got to be those of us who will end up learning the hardway

But, being a clean , sharp knife will leave a clean wound and will (hopefully) heal quickly. Other then that, all I can say is "Knock it off!" Was going to say "Cut it out", but don't want you to take me too seriously

Six butterfly stiches and a sock full of blood while at work! Double d'oh!

Quite a good routine to work in as you are selling a knife too...stab yourself and wipe your blood off the blade before the new owner can see it! Don't try this at home.

Ferret: Ok so if you watch the video I actiually show that to practice opening the GUNTING in forard and reverse grip that one holds ones palms either palm up or palm down..So, since I came up with this I should know better.."Gee Bram, how come you do this??" Well smart guy that I am I take a LIVE GUNTING..big mistake and I proceed to open it forward grip PALM DOWN...( just as I say NOT TO DO!)and I neatly opened the knife with a pop as the blade cut up into my palm....
So don't feel bad...That's twice that I have stuck the GUNTING deep into my hand...LOL.

. Some people just can't be trusted with sharp objects

. I think you'd better just give all your remaining knives to me before you do yourself any more damage

. At least this makes me feel a bit better about that incident with the Harpy at 5 a.m. (and yes I was practising fast draws from a neck sheath).

Oh, BTW mate, I hope the leg heals up quickly

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Yeah - if the Master is cutting himself (will we see it in the next version of the video...) then why should we simple fox worry...

I cut my thumb yesterday while practicing left and opening of the endura I keep in my office drawer...

Ever wonder why your lawyer keeps his left hand under the table during your meeting?

It's not what you think...

Reading about all of these self-inflicted cuts makes me feel slightly less stupid. I actually cut myself with a Cricket (thumb not clearing the liner lock) two days in a row. I was opening and closing the knife with one hand, not moving my thumb out as quickly as I should have. Lately, I concentrate more as I'm closing the blade.

Neither was a deep cut, but both were bleeders.

the original prototype was double edged...if you did a kinetic opening and used a "florette motion" it automatically cut you on the back stroke...
sooo yes. I did and it cut me..
Hell I've been cut alot,....
I try not to cut myself the same way twice...
I watched a Dr. trying to be a big shot slice his thumb open to the bone by really flicking open my GUNTING with his thumb on the EDGE ..yes the EDGE of the blade...
Its just flayed right open...
yup..SPYDERCO SHARP!
