Hey Guys....

Kit,, since you have a Beaumont Horizontal Edge Grinder,, can you answer a few questions for me..??

Is it a nice running machine? Quiet, vibration free ?

If I were to get it wothout the DC motor and controller, what kind of motor would I need ??

I think variable speed is the only way to go with a unit like this...

It looks like a very nice grinder,,very valuable in the shop...

I wish they made one that uses 2X72 belts as I have access to tons of these...(used)

Any help would be Great...

Thanks

Eric....

Eric,
I love it. When I got it, the 2x48 belts was a concern but now that I've used it, and with the cheaper price of 2x48, I'm perfectly happy with it. Got a 1 1/2 hp DC variable speed and it has all the power I need. Had Rob send the complete set up of wheels - 1/2" to 3". I get belts from Pop and he has the same ones I use on the other grinders.
It's well made, runs very quiet, tracks nice and does what I ask of it.

Trace and a few others speak highly of the J&L Horizontal grinder, but I haven't used one of those.

Hey Kit...

Thanks for the advice....

I think this machines is in my near future...Gotta finish paying for all the other tools I just bought...

I've been on a buying binge lately...

Lets see...

Bee Variable 2X72
6X48 Sander
Steel bandsaw
wood bandsaw
12 flat disc grinder
Spindle sander

My god..
Where does it end??:)

Thanks dude..

Eric...

I've been wanting one of Rob's horizontal grinders for a while. Gotta get a radial platen first, though.

If I lost mine and could not replace it - I quite. I get my 2 X 72 belts from Pop but have found the cheaper 2 X 48 Ebay belts just fine for my edge grinder (same grinder you ask about and Kit has).

Hey George...

Ahh but is a grinder like this a toy or a tool ?

I suppose I can get by without it,, so it would be a toy..

However, it's going to make a better product,,so then it's a tool....

So,, lets leave it at that,, because thats what I told the little Mrs... :) :)
and I've Completely convinced myself..:)

Eric, that's more than you need for sheaths... are you making your own knives now, too?

Hey Steve....

Yaaa thats the intended plan....

Just got a bunch of new tools,, so I'd better do something with them...

Just waiting for the 2 X72,,everything else is in place...

Ahhh..., another good man headed over to the dark side.

Hasn't even gotten the first grinder and he already wants a second. Has a familiar ring to it!

You're hopelessly lost now, Eric. :D

Hey Jerry....

LMAO....

Yaa man it's addictive that's for sure... Now I know why they call you Steel Dust Junkies...

I can't WAIT to get it

BTW...

Another important question...

How fine actually is the scribe line between knife making and marriage ?

Will I see the line coming,,or will I grind past it quickly ??

You see things are different now..
Before my shop was in the basement,,and my wife would only have to yell from the top of the stairs...

Now I'm actually in another building,,and I don't always hear the intercom(or have it on for that matter)...

I'm already getting"You are spending way too much time out there!"

I'm Screwed aren't I ??!!

Hey that's great you're making knives!!!

Have you been making some with Jeff or waiting until you've got your stuff setup? Any pics yet?

You can buy all the pulleys and easily modify the horizontal grinder to use 2x72 belts. This is a good option for those who have access to tons of 2x72 belts. Otherwise, Kit is right, I've been doing some thinking, and it actually makes sense to just set it up stock, for the 48" belts, as they are just cheaper! Also, it will take up less space, which is a big issue in many guys shops.
I can't wait to get mine. I just got a new BaderIII, and now I'm already talking about a horizontal setup. Got to get a good bandsaw first though. I can't bring myself to do the HF bandsaw thing. I need something a little nicer. Nice bandsaws are so COOL... I was thinking of a Wilton VS (wood/metal cutting) If nothing else, a nice metal cutting bandsaw..
Anybody got a good deal on a bandsaw? LOL!
Good luck bro!

Harbor Freight has a cheap metal cutting bandsaw that does the job. I think it needs some modification to be used in the vertical position, but I've seen pictures and threads on that here.

Hey Chiro,
I just posted above that I don't want the HF saw. Just a little cheap for me. Not bashing other guys saws at all, cause yes, the HF saw gets the job done, but I need something a little bigger/heavier duty, and just nicer overall. I want a nice saw that needs no mods (yes I know the HF can be used without mods). For around $800 you can get a much nicer Wilton, and for $1000 you can get a SWEET bandsaw that is VS too.
I might look around for a used one locally. I've let some good bandsaw deals slip through my hands at the local used machinery store. I've seen quite a few on ebay and in the paper too. Many guys I know, buy a used Wilton, Powermatic, Doall (my dream saw) or one of the older Deltas that were made like tanks, and they have been going strong for 25-30 years. I'll just have to see what my budget is...

Hey Guys...

Yaa a nice metal saw would be sweet...
However when funds are limited,,you gotta get what you can...

This is what I did...

Bought a Delta Horizontal/Vertical bandsaw..The floor model.. Useless the way it sits,, so I tore the head off of it,,stripped the wiring and not needed parts from the base,,and ran it over to a buddy who chopped off all but about 8-10" of base

Remounted the head, drilled a new hole for the switch,, then use one part of the vise to lock the saw into the upright position,,and the other to close off the hole...

I also got some plate steel from the local metal bender and made a new table for it..
Total time,,including rnning around about 2 hours...

Works Great,, is cheap enough to do and other than using crap blades I'm pretty happy with it...

I'll get some pictures up in a new thread,,since this one is now pretty much ThreadJacked

Hey Eric,
I did not know Delta made a horizontal vertical saw. Is this the same saw as the HF and Jet models? I assume it is.
I would love to see pics/info/pricing. Thanks bro. I'm looking for your thread!

Hey Razor...

Yaa it's a typical horizontal/vertical bandsaw.. A lot of companies make them.
They are cheap,, easy to Mod,,and cut like crazy...

Not the best,, but it does the trick,,and sure beats a hacksaw...

Tutorial is going up in a few mins...

Razorhunter, I missed your avoidance of the HF bandsaw. Sorry! The HF one seems to use a really wide blade, too, although maybe they're all like that. Can you get a bandsaw into tight countours like finger notches, or is it used mainly for the rough outline of the blade and contours still have to be ground in? A good bandsaw would definitely save a lot of time on grinding, and over the long haul, money on supplies to grind material that could be otherwise cut away.
