I was working on this knife this morning and for some reason I was thinking about kit knives. I've never bought a kit knife kit but when it comes right down to it all the knives I make I end up making a kit first. All the parts are worked on seperratly. I guess the trickest part is drilling the channel for the tang and then bending the tang to go threw it.

The ring nut is all thats holding things together in this picture.

Thanks Raymond, you just answered a question that's been batting around in my head for a long time, which is are the ferrules finished before or after final assembly. Now I know, and know I'd have done it the hard way. ;)

Ray,

If you were to produce kit knives my guess is they would be of the finest available.

Ray  the tang is bent on that one,,
better sent it this way , I'll fix it up and send it back in a year or 4 :)
we can't have them out in the public that way you know.. :D :D

:)
nice job... :D

Dan, The tang on this one is pretty darn straight compaired to others I've done. There's alot of time involved trying to get the bends right just to get it all the way threw. Once I get it there trying to get the threaded section to come out square is another battle.

That is a beautiful knife, very nice work. I am trying my first hidden tang knife and I am struggling with drilling the hole and lining everything up correct, but that is just beautiful.

Larry, Everything I make, the nuts are also made out of wrought iron. No two are alike.

I realy like the look so I guess that's just another thing I'll have to do.
Great job.

you'll have to start making and using a swivel connector :)

IG, I confess I use JB Weld like most everyone else. I'll do the blade and the front of the handle at the sametime. Nice thing about the ring nut is it holds everything in place. After about 8 hours I'll remove the ring nut and the butt cap and fill the void up with epoxy. One trick I've been using is sticking wire inside the void and use it to work out the air bubbles. I use to remove the wire's but anymore I just cut them off once I'm sure the void is full. I picked up a spool of copper wire used to re-wind electrical motors and it works great for doing this since its so thin. I'll put the cap and the ring nut on and and hang it up. The epoxy I use is made by Tap Plastic's, its called Super Hard. Its a 4 to 1 mix.

Ray, I always enjoy seeing your knives and just can't wait for your next knife to be posted. Sort of miss not seeing any rebar knives anymore. I make a variety of knives both in style and prices myself and have for many years. Seems with knives even if some are similar they can still be different with each maker adding their own touch to each style or type made. Like finger prints, never duplicated.

Peter, I guess I never did mention the size of the knife. The blade is 4 1/2", overall its 9".

Hey Ramsey, I've been leaving the rebar alone mainly because my wrist has been bothering me. I'm always getting orders on knives that have been sold. I want one just like that one, I always tell them they'll be simular. Even with a picture I find it tuff to duplicate. Did you ever do anything with the large saw blade you came across awhile ago?

Ray,
Yes I still have it setting by the back door of my shop. I cut a section from it and etched but I'm not sure that I did a correct etch to get a pattern to show. Just have't taken any more time to try it. Seems like you said that you did three etches. Like you said, people see a knife you've made and order one like it or "similar". I have many who will say I want the handle like this one except the gard and I would like it to be like the one on this other one and the same with the blades. For a long time I have worked at just trying to sell only what I make, or have on hand, but when they have choices from all the pictures it really slows production down. I plan on moving to Nixa MO next year and will be closing my shop store here. Perhaps I will become a little more reclusive which should help a lot in the number of knives made and available. There are a pair of "wall leaners" 54 in. dia. X almost 1/4" thick in my shop that I would really like to experiment with. Made a clever for a fellow from one of them but that's all.
