Let's get a thread going for the following:

Survival kits with a price limit. To keep it simple, let's say $25, $50, $100.

What would you put in a kit if you could only afford $25? Then, what would you add, change/improve, if you had $50? If you had $100??

So, whatcha theenk??

p.s. sorry if this has been done before. I'm kinda a newbie here....

Wow! It adds up quick, especially for multiple kits.

Back in November I put together four simple 'get found' kids kit for my sons and nephews/nieces.

  • $7 case -3"x6" zippered nylon
  • $3 Whistle
  • $3 waterproof match safe/matches
  • $1 rain poncho
  • $3 signal mirror
  • $11 mini-buck
  • large orange bags

I suppose the knives were the most expensive part, but my reasoning was to have one for each kit that was always there.

Just last week, I had to do this for a friend:

Tupperware container - $1.00 (Dollar store)
Space blanket - $1.99 (Walmart)
Poncho - $1.00 (Walmart)
50' ParaCord - $1.00 (Army-Navy)
WP Match Container - $.88 (Army-Navy)
WP Matches - Made my own from existing supply
Bic Lighter - $.89 (Walmart)
Toilet Paper - $.78 (Walmart)
AMA First Aid Packet - $1.97 (Walmart)
Zip-Lock bags (2 - 1 gal) - exisitng stock
Potable Aqua Tabs - $3.97 (Walmart)
Food bars (2) - $3.00 (Walmart)
Rayovac Flashlite & Batteries - $1.97 (Walmart)
Acme Thunderer Whistle - $1.99 (Army-Navy)
Brunton Compass - $3.99 (Walmart)
SAK Recruit - $13.99 (Walmart)

A little over your $25.00 limit, but some really good quality items are in this stock.

PS - Forgot one thing, I added 2 packets of Alpine Spiced Cider mix to counteract that nasty iodine taste from the Potable Aqua tabs.

I guess it's tough to beat the sarge's suggestions. I just put together two boxes today, one for my truck, one for her car. I will add a small notepad and a pencil, however.

And what about a kit at the next levels, $50 and $100??? I'd think for a C-note, it could be a whopper of a kit.

Anyone??

mguy,

Make it much bigger and it'll cost a lot more ... you'll need to hire a gunbearer to carry it all. lol

Add in one of Greg's or Bagheera's ferrocium rods or a Spark-Lite ($15 ish); ugrade the SAK to the Huntsman model ($15 ish); depending on season Deet or Handwarmers; maybe a GI canteen, cup, and cover ($20 ish depending on condition.)

You need water and thermal protection to survive short term. Fire is a BIG help and food eventually becomes and issue. Items which can do double duty witht he above and assisting SAR are smart.

Depending on where you have to survive, SatLink, $10,000 cash (half U.S./half local) and an American Express card could do.

I once read Tom Browm (I think?) say, "If I have a full set of clothes and a pocket knife I am not surviving, I am on vacation!"
