The first one (with the diamond pattern handle) is pretty much my Grail EDC. Not kidding at all. Put some super steel in it and I'm there. But most of you are tired of hearing me say that over and over.

Why two ? I almost for got to put that in this post. You would have thought me bonkers for sure.
Why two . . . one polished edge taken to at least 8000 Shapton . . . the second one left very toothy. I haven't decided yet where to stop with the toothy stone. I need to learn about toothy. I am a toothy illiterate. Maybe that will be my thread in the General Discussion and I need to do some searching of old threads but anyone feel free to comment or give me some links. Shall I go like Ankerson's 400 grit with some strop right after? I don't know.

Well I was planning on waiting a while to post this, after I got some time with "The Twins”.
and I was going to post this in the General Discussions forum.
But
the second knife came earlier than planned (Saturday rather than Monday).
But/And
I am taken aback by what I found in the package.
aaaaaahhhhhhhhh
? ? ? ?
aaaaaahhhhhhhhh
? ? ? ?
Hmmmm

Dear moderator and Cold Steel Dudes :
Is this a Real Cold Steel Kitchen Classic ? (the ugly one with the grey bird’s eye and the weeeeeeeird handle texture).
The all black one with the really cool diamond pattern is what I bought first and what I expected to get just a couple of months after I bought the first one. I just checked the Cold Steel .com and it still shows the diamond pattern for 2016. Could it be that I got one from years ago (the grey eye)(no date on the retail display packaging).

The next two photos look the same but I am showing the other side of the handle on both knives; in other words the grey eye has “Cold Steel” lettering on BOTH sides of the handle.

To it’s credit the grind on the grey eye is smoother shown in this close up photo with the grind on the diamond handled knife shown right after.

and the sharpening seems to be just a tad more even on grey eye though the first one I received was pretty much hair whittling (some spots yes some spots not so much) but over all seriously sharp from the maker. I AM SUPER PLEASED BY THE SHARPENING ON BOTH THESE KNIVES FROM THE MAKER. Golly gosh . . . nine dollar knives with shipping that make about any other production hundred dollar plus knife look cheep and silly in comparison.

I may as well post some of the other stuff I was going to present before I got all bogged down in the aesthetics :

The best sheaths I could find are the Mora’s. I had the more ornate longer one and I intensionally ordered the planer, shorter one the same time I ordered the second Cold Steel Paring Knife.

I read that some one had wrapped their Mora in plastic wrap and put the sheath in hot water with the knife in it to custom fit it.
I am thinking . . . heat gun and no water BUT I haven’t gone there yet. The fit is pretty darn usable as is with the Cold Steel knives.

I tend to just carry the sheath in my pocket rather than on a belt and I may cut off the belt “loops” but for now I am leaving them on.

Note the shorter planer sheath allows the knife to ride with more handle exposed; I think that is the way to go if anyone is considering going down the same dark path of weirdness that I am currently blissed out on. By the Buy this second sheath comes with the Morakniv Classic No 1 Utility knife carbon steel 3.9 inch (the red handled knife shown here) about $18 (cheeper than buying just a sheath on the knife online shops and as far as I can see the fit is better and the sheath is more compact).

The more ornate longer sheath came with a Mora wood carving knife No 122 = 2.4 inch and was a some what more expensive knife.

So there you have it. Super cheep; super great cutters; super weird post . . .
come on back . . .

Unless some sophisticated counterfeiter been following Cold Steel closely and adopt their latest logo, i'd say this is the real deal. Also, it doesn't make sense to create a knock off that's so different from the original copy.
I do think that the logo and the grey eye are unnecessary and ugly however...

Thanks guys.
Yah In hind site copying / faking very inexspensive knives doesn't make much sense.
I wonder how that meeting went at Cold Steel :
Hey every body listen up and look over here. I think what we need to do is take this simple black on black knife and make it two tone that way it can be more exspensive to make, harder to produce AND uglier all at the same time.
Every one at the meating went for it like a pack of rats, except for that one guy, who listens to Chet Baker and drives that weird little car . . . he is sooooo weird. No body likes him anyway.
And the rest as they say "was history".

Guess I am calling up some knife stores to see if they might have some old stock.

They did it because the handles on the old ones would deteriorate if washed in the dishwasher, and would get sticky when you cut juicy/sticky foods. They changed it because of the "kitchen" philosophy of use, so it made it a little worse for non-kitchen uses.

MountainPeek,

Well that helps me understand. Thanks

I have another older style diamond pattern winging its way to me as we speak. I kept the grey eye. After all it is well made; even nicer than the old one blade finish and sharp wise.
I wish I could find more info on the steel. German Krups 4116
I have since learned a nice little trick to quickly eliminate the gilding-foil like wire edge on the stones without breaking it off and without stropping so we are becoming fast friends.

Doesn't mean I won't strop the toothy one but . . . still need to learn tooth lore. That is my mission today.

On this day it is fitting to . . . (I have been told that astrologically “the moon is in Gemini”. The twins you know. Yah . . . I don’t know either . . . but anyway . . .

The ULTIMATE in EDC perfection has just been acheived.
I am talking about none other than :
THE TWINS !

I now have IDENTICAL twins.

The grey eye ? Well no one claimed it in the maternity and so I guess I have a back-up-extra. Not a bad thing.

Yes sir / mam . . . light weight, inexpensive (expendable), very well made, ergonomically a splendiferous pinnacle of perfectiosity.

There are a few kinks to work out : whether to wear one on the left and the other on the right or both on one side. Perfect aero dynamics for high velocity reentry demands the symmetrical approach . . . effective application is split fifty fifty assuming the warrior is sufficiently well trained to be ambidextrous with his weapons and there is the two at once scenario . . .
well no matter . . . all will become clear in the field tests.

Note the low speed / high drag . . . er . . . I mean high speed / low drag duty belt !
Only the best here. No expense has been spared. That is as long as it fit in the bloody budget.

Speaking of Duty Belt I am finding this one here (a wider one than in the Twins photo) very useful for a work tool belt.

The other Real duty belts that I found were too wide for my tool pouches that I tend to already have.
FINALLY , off in left field (read China made; and only ships from China), I found this one and had to give it a try. It was the only game in town. I didn’t like the look of the Klein and other belts. They seemed to suck for various reasons. I found this one on amazon; it’s called :
CS Force(TM) Men's Nylon Military Tactical Web Duty Utility Belt with Side Release Buckle 1.5 Inch Black

For the outrageous sum of ten bucks with shipping.
You will wait for freaking ever to get it but I liked it so much I bought a second one for at home.
Uncle Mike’s; heads up; you need to make these and add them to your line.

PS:
Getting back to the Twins:
I may have to rethink the inexpensive / expendable aspect. These diamond pattern jobs are getting harder to find. I mean they rethunk ‘em didn’t they ? I just tried to buy two more from my “source” and they are out of stock.

Come to think of it since they are not making any more . . . they are collector’s items . . . why . . . I’m sure the market value is shooting skyward as we speak.
Hmmmm
What if I loose one ?
What if I damage one ?
These things are irreplaceably valuable . . . practically priceless.
Oh . . . no . . . not my Ultimate EDC Systems Approach . . . rendered too valuable to use for all but the most important missions . . . before they have even been fully field tested.

Hmmmmmmm

Well there is only one thing for it . . .

Whatamibid ?

[kidding dear moderator; kidding, kidding]

We need a like button on this forum. That post was pretty entertaining. :D Nice set o' twins there.:cool:

Ha, ha . . . thanks.
I am still kind of flummoxed about how much I like these. Oh well; guess I may as well go with it.
On the more expensive / flashier side of things I now have the hots for a Cold Steel Ti Lite with aluminum handle in six inch.
And a MAD plan for it . . . which involves some major blade modification . . .
but thas another thread for another time.
