The first one (with the diamond pattern handle) is pretty much my Grail EDC. Not kidding at all. Put some super steel in it and I'm there. But most of you are tired of hearing me say that over and over.
Why two ? I almost for got to put that in this post. You would have thought me bonkers for sure.
Why two . . . one polished edge taken to at least 8000 Shapton . . . the second one left very toothy. I haven't decided yet where to stop with the toothy stone. I need to learn about toothy. I am a toothy illiterate. Maybe that will be my thread in the General Discussion and I need to do some searching of old threads but anyone feel free to comment or give me some links. Shall I go like Ankerson's 400 grit with some strop right after? I don't know.
Well I was planning on waiting a while to post this, after I got some time with "The Twins.
and I was going to post this in the General Discussions forum.
But
the second knife came earlier than planned (Saturday rather than Monday).
But/And
I am taken aback by what I found in the package.
aaaaaahhhhhhhhh

Hmmmm
Dear moderator and Cold Steel Dudes :
Is this a Real Cold Steel Kitchen Classic ? (the ugly one with the grey birds eye and the weeeeeeeird handle texture).
The all black one with the really cool diamond pattern is what I bought first and what I expected to get just a couple of months after I bought the first one. I just checked the Cold Steel .com and it still shows the diamond pattern for 2016. Could it be that I got one from years ago (the grey eye)(no date on the retail display packaging).

The next two photos look the same but I am showing the other side of the handle on both knives; in other words the grey eye has Cold Steel lettering on BOTH sides of the handle.

To its credit the grind on the grey eye is smoother shown in this close up photo with the grind on the diamond handled knife shown right after.

and the sharpening seems to be just a tad more even on grey eye though the first one I received was pretty much hair whittling (some spots yes some spots not so much) but over all seriously sharp from the maker. I AM SUPER PLEASED BY THE SHARPENING ON BOTH THESE KNIVES FROM THE MAKER. Golly gosh . . . nine dollar knives with shipping that make about any other production hundred dollar plus knife look cheep and silly in comparison.
I may as well post some of the other stuff I was going to present before I got all bogged down in the aesthetics :
The best sheaths I could find are the Moras. I had the more ornate longer one and I intensionally ordered the planer, shorter one the same time I ordered the second Cold Steel Paring Knife.

I read that some one had wrapped their Mora in plastic wrap and put the sheath in hot water with the knife in it to custom fit it.
I am thinking . . . heat gun and no water BUT I havent gone there yet. The fit is pretty darn usable as is with the Cold Steel knives.
I tend to just carry the sheath in my pocket rather than on a belt and I may cut off the belt loops but for now I am leaving them on.
Note the shorter planer sheath allows the knife to ride with more handle exposed; I think that is the way to go if anyone is considering going down the same dark path of weirdness that I am currently blissed out on. By the Buy this second sheath comes with the Morakniv Classic No 1 Utility knife carbon steel 3.9 inch (the red handled knife shown here) about $18 (cheeper than buying just a sheath on the knife online shops and as far as I can see the fit is better and the sheath is more compact).
The more ornate longer sheath came with a Mora wood carving knife No 122 = 2.4 inch and was a some what more expensive knife.
So there you have it. Super cheep; super great cutters; super weird post . . .
come on back . . .
